Acquired a lovely little polka dot plant last mo. Known for their incredible foliage. Wasn't expecting it to produce teeny-tiny flowers. Also wasn't expecting the hairy leaves at that scale. So alien 👽. Gonna be a fun macro subject 👍

Fall sumac kaleidoscope.

Aside from the interesting patterns, my favorite part of making these is looking for faces or creatures which you don't see until the composite is formed.

Abstract photograph created using a single photo of fall sumac leaves and sumac branches. The sumac leaves extend along either side of a slender branch. Fall sumac leaves range from red to orange to yellow and in various combinations of those three colors. The photo is created by copying the original and then flipping the copy horizontally. The original and the copy are joined at the flip point and then both are copied, flipped vertically, and the resulting copies are then joined at the flip point. The result is four-quadrant image with each quadrant a mirror of the quadrants opposing it. The appearance is similar to what one would see in a four-mirror kaleidoscope. In addition to the realistic objects in each photo, the process creates multiple abstract objects especially at or near where one photo attaches to another.

Viceroy along the Iowa River Trail on Monday.

Viceroys & monarchs are considered Müllerian mimics or "honest mimics". Both are distasteful to predators. They're in different genera but developed color patterns that reinforce each species' "warning".

Here's some early pics of my new zinnia mix, "blueberry cream". I would have called it "blueberry yogurt" but I'm weird that way. Still trying to get a good shot of the white ones. Just haven't caught the right lighting yet to do them justice.

Snug as a bug in a rose mallow bud!

Bit cold this July morning. Found this (likely) 2-spotted longhorn bee a bit sleepy/groggy in the rose mallow where it decided to bed down.

How 'bout that black and pink though?!

Extreme closeup photograph of a (likely) two-spotted longhorn bee resting just within the central petals of a partially opened rose mallow bud (Hibiscus laevis). The bee has a few patches of fine granules of pink-white rose mallow pollen on its leg and head. This bee species has similar features to honeybees with a black abdomen, dark thorax, and head covered in fine black hairs, two long antennae, three simple black eyes on the forehead, and two black and gray compound eyes facing forward, six segmented legs, and transparent wings with dark veining. The upper segments of the bee's legs are covered in fine black hairs but the lower segments on the rear legs are covered in fine pale-yellow hairs.

Still amazes me how little I knew about plants prior my taking photos of them. For example, 4 yrs ago I didn't realize that maple trees produce flowers having never paid attention prior. My favorite is definitely Norway maples w/ their gorgeous lime-green blooms.
