February 15: How big are your settings?

Current WIP is a far future space opera. FTL via wormhole has led to human descended species expanding throughout the Virgo supercluster of galaxies (the local group is just one small corner). Over 10 million star systems on the wormhole grid and 10x to 100x that connected via (rare) STL ship.

Current setting is a "tiny" empire of some 8000 star systems (so 10,000-30,000 planets and 10x that many moons/large habitats).

#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2025.10.11 — Have you ever written an unlikable protagonist?

I learned this lesson the hard way. Buying editors won't tolerate an initially unlikable protagonist, no matter how wonderful their transformative arc, or the ending—unless you have a brand name or a fan following, or at least a recently profitable track record. I'm needing to rewrite a trilogy and a standalone novel for penance for my hubris.

#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2025.05.09 1/2— Are there "normal" words you avoid using? Why?

Define normal beyond a setting on my washer?

I try to have the story sound appropriate to time and place, so Tye, who came through a portal, talks very much in our modern language. Those in the fantasy world have their own idioms and such. As long as the word fits character, plot, tone, genre, and age group, I'd use it.
