Discovering a child needing care, but whom has no parents she can find, would send her into a tail spin (figuratively only, since she's a day angel that can fly). Becoming attached would be catastrophic for her and the kid. There are few things she would go to the constabulary to deal with, but she'd risk the coppers for the sake of a child. No way is she keeping it; no way would she walk away, leaving it on the pavement either.

how do you avoid the I I I I I I problem?
If you tell a story about something that happened to you, how do you avoid saying I did, I heard, I said? Don't use the constructions until you need them, as in The bell ran loudly, versus "I heard a loud bell.*. Attribution is necessary, but the narrator can simply declare events or talk about what others do without specificity relating it back to themselves. Take a look at the sample stories pinned to my profile.
Btw: I've written this as first person narrative. Where's the I? Is it repetitive?

I barely interact with the non-Brazilian Portuguese speaking fediverse. Also, since I'm on my personal instance and too distant from the main flagship instances it means that I'm almost always "protected" from major issues most people suffer from.
Brazilians are very united on fediverse and I like it, but I' m afraid I'm not exposed to the majority of possible experiences opting to stay away from the English speaking community and I would like to change this.
I'm an IT/Ops person (ex-sysadmin, went through SRE and now working on Platform Engineering) and would like to interact more with the broader fedivese.

I learned this lesson the hard way. Buying editors won't tolerate an initially unlikable protagonist, no matter how wonderful their transformative arc, or the ending—unless you have a brand name or a fan following, or at least a recently profitable track record. I'm needing to rewrite a trilogy and a standalone novel for penance for my hubris.

Making the job bad news:
Suppose that when an ICE agent tries to arrest someone, state and local officials demand to see their identification and the warrant for arresting that person. If the agent fails to provide one, the state law-enforcement officer could say: "Since you are apparently not working for the federal government and have no arrest warrant for this person, I have to assume you are a common criminal trying to kidnap someone. Kidnapping is a state crime. You are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent, etc." Then the ICE agent is handcuffed, taken away and charged with kidnapping. ICE agents who break down doors to gain entry to buildings and can't prove they are federal agents following lawful orders could be arrested for burglary or breaking and entering under state laws. Having states aggressively enforce their own laws against individual agents and doing their best to not have them released on bail changes the incentive structure for wanting to work for ICE. How many headlines do there have to be saying: "ICE agent arrested for kidnapping and held without bail" before many agents start looking for other jobs?

Friends, Friendship. Teammates. Buddies. Partners in crime†. Frankly, I don't get it. I do the job and make sure everybody comes back. I train them until they drop in a sweaty heap, but then they insist on group meals and singing, that stuff, and won't let me pay. Sure I have everybody's back in a fight, or with clients, or the boss, but that's the right thing to do. I am responsible for them. They ask me for advice, too. Sometime weird. I ended up punching the cheating husband when he made a pass at me, which was actually sort of fun. At times they won't leave me along to be quiet with my books, which is really all I want out of life. I am really the wrong person to ask such a question to.

The beta readers have all stalled out, life intervening. I've waited. I want to ask nicely, but the "how" and the how-to-do-it-effectively is escaping me. I kinda feel that plugging in my commanding tech-support persona to overcome my shy-person normal nature won't cut it.
