Doing a quote on here feels surreal. Sadly I can't quote most posts ... I wonder if my old posts are locked like that... is there a way to unlock them?
OOOH BOY
so for those of y’all following this #quoot saga:
1. on a browser, if you want to quote a post, you have to use the reply button on the post. am providing an image of this thread to show how it’s working on the browser interface
2. this reply-quote feature isn’t found on the android app yet
3. they still refuse to use the oEmbed standard that allows for rendering a link into a full toot or activity pub object… 🧵
RE: https://mastodon.social/@blogdiva/115225922791811080
so, am testing the #quoot or #quotepost feature in the app and it’s working.
been using it by opening posts in a browser, so it’s nice that i can do it directly from the #android app. i almost exclusively toot from my tablet these days.
the thing is… this isn’t a quoted post à la Twitter.
all we had to do was to copy & paste a link to the tweet for it to appear embedded with the javascript & html magic of the Oembed protocol.
what @MastodonEngineering created here is something else… 🧵
WHENEVER I POSTED A QT, i limited the text to 100 characters, always included the permalink to the source and name or handle of the writer.
AGAIN: because at their most basic function, a #quotePost is a form of bloquote and citation. you don’t just want to include the text or image of import but you also want to give ATTRIBUTION.
so, with a QT we were able to:
- highlight interesting or important text
- establish a source and attribution for that text
🧵
Being able to retroactively change who can quote post you is great, but I wish I could change the visibility of already published posts as well...
BACK TO QUOTED TWEETS
taking snapshots of a tweet and posting them was a way of circumventing the blockquote conundrum with the 250 character limitation; BUT there was another limitation: CELL PHONE DATA PLANS.
there was no #Android when Twitter was first created. mobile posting wasn’t by way of an app. we posted via text messaging.
how much media you included in a mobile tweet was limited by your phone’s data plan. i certainly was, and that’s why my QT was optimized for texts… 🧵

The first beta release of Mastodon 4.5.0 is ready for testing!
Quote posts are finally here, as well as automated fetching of remote replies and a lot of other improvements.
For server moderators, there is also a way to block registrations based on keywords appearing in usernames.
Please test it out and provide feedback 💬
If all goes well, we plan to release the final 4.5.0 version within the next 3 weeks.

Woohoo! Quote posts are here.
@MastodonEngineering today released the first public beta version, so your instance might soon fire it up. And, official production release is only weeks away.
Have been using quote posts here on .online for the last few weeks and can say it is stable and really well thought out. Lovin' quote posts!
Great job Mastodon Engineering!
I am working on supporting quote post (I was not holding my breath for this feature to be implemented, TBH) in tinmop. I have met some pesky bugs related to those characters that occupy more than a column when rendered on a terminal (emoji, I am looking at you 🙂), but the results seems not too bad. Enjoy the recursive rendering! 🙂

Good morning! If you’re on mastodon.social (or another server running nightly builds) you can begin quoting posts in your posts (quooting?) starting today. Remember, you control whether you can be quoted, and can always retract your post from a specific quote. And you can quote me on that!
RE: https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/115224321548138026
This is my first "official" Mastodon-style quote-post.
Although, quote-posting has existed on the Fediverse for years now — on Misskey, on all the Misskey forks (ex: Firefish), on Pleroma, on the Pleroma forks (ex: Akkoma), on Mitra, on Hollo, etc.
Plus, people have been doing screen-shot style quote-posts on Mastodon (and other places on the Fediverse), too, for years.

something that wasn't clear to me and perhaps of interest to others about #quoteposts
i knew this:
in your preferences you can change the setting to allow #quoteposting on your toots globally. to anyone/ followers only/ or just yourself
but i didn't know you could also do it per post
so you might allow anyone to quote post you, as a general policy
but then on one particular post of yours you may disallow a #quotepost as you see fit
This is really nice and something we haven't seen on any other social media platforms. Elsewhere, you can just quote someone without asking, but in the Fediverse, you need permission, and you can actually control who quotes you without having to delete your post.
It feels great to be part of something truly unprecedented.

I've just released a new nightly version of Mastodon Bird UI that supports the upcoming Quote Posts feature.

It's coming 👀
"Support for verifying remote quotes according to FEP-044f and displaying them in the Web UI has been implemented.
Quoting other people is not implemented yet, and it is currently not possible to mark your own posts as allowing quotes. However, a new “Who can quote” setting has been added to the “Posting defaults” section of the user settings. This setting allows you to set a default that will be used for new posts made on Mastodon 4.5 and newer, when quote posts will be fully implemented."
