#UN #climate talks fizzle out 10 yrs after #ParisAccord
Nearly 200 countries reached a weak agreement Saturday at the United Nations climate talks in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest. The deal represents a win for the #oil, #gas & #coal industries because it makes NO MENTION of curtailing the use of #FossilFuels, the main drivers of #ClimateChange.
#Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio #Lula da Silva, with the support of about half the countries, had pushed for a road map for ending the use of #oil, #gas & #coal.
#Trump, who is withdrawing the #UnitedStates from the #ParisAgreement, refused to send negotiators to the event. Even without the Trump admin present to champion #FossilFuel interests, the measure faced stiff opposition.
Dozens of #DevelopingNations joined with major #oil producers including #SaudiArabia & #Russia to oppose the road map, arguing they were unable curtail #FossilFuels while many of their citizens lack #electricity.
Facing that resistance, #Brazil’s effort failed.
The #EU was the major holdout pushing for a deal to take stronger actions to slash #climate #emissions, but it agreed to support the accord after an all-night negotiation session that extended well into the morning Saturday.
