A #gulfstream G650 (Reg: N817GS) reportedly used by #larryellison has been detected in flight since Sat Dec 13 2025 14:25:04 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time). Since then it has emitted an estimated 2459 kg of #CO2. If this was flown commercial, the predicted average #emissions would have been 127 kg. #CO2emissions
Hundreds of people across Japan have sued the central government seeking damages for "unconstitutional" inaction on climate change, saying the country's "grossly inadequate" response jeopardizes health and livelihoods. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/12/18/japan/crime-legal/climate-change-lawsuit/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #crimelegal #japanesecourts #climatechange #environment #emissions #un #parisagreement

The planet is on track to log its second-hottest year on record in 2025, tied with 2023 after a historic high in 2024, Europe's global warming monitor said. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2025/12/09/climate-change/tie-second-hottest-year/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #climatechange #climatechange #heatwaves #extremeweather #cop30 #environment #energy #emissions
Another big jump in atmospheric CO2, (still) measured at Mauna Loa: Based on daily values, the November average was ~426.5 ppm, that's around 2.7 ppm higher than last year!
From 2030*, passengers of private jets departing from the Netherlands will pay a flight tax of €420 to €2,100, depending on distance. So far, they only paid €29.40, just like ordinary airline passengers.
Yay for Dutch parliament!

Nations sealed a modest agreement at the U.N. climate summit in the Brazilian Amazon on Saturday as many countries swallowed weaker terms on a fossil fuel phaseout to preserve unity. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2025/11/23/climate-change/cop30-climate-deal-fossil-fuels/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #climatechange #brazil #cop30 #climatechange #emissions #fossilfuels
#Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio #Lula da Silva, with the support of about half the countries, had pushed for a road map for ending the use of #oil, #gas & #coal.
#Trump, who is withdrawing the #UnitedStates from the #ParisAgreement, refused to send negotiators to the event. Even without the Trump admin present to champion #FossilFuel interests, the measure faced stiff opposition.
Dozens of #DevelopingNations joined with major #oil producers including #SaudiArabia & #Russia to oppose the road map, arguing they were unable curtail #FossilFuels while many of their citizens lack #electricity.
Facing that resistance, #Brazil’s effort failed.
The #EU was the major holdout pushing for a deal to take stronger actions to slash #climate #emissions, but it agreed to support the accord after an all-night negotiation session that extended well into the morning Saturday.

Researchers have achieved significant successes including an 80-acre restoration near #LosAngeles while developing kelp #farming for #carbon capture and agricultural biofertilizers that could help California reach #netzero #emissions.
Companies and groups backing carbon-capture technology, which critics slam as an excuse to keep burning fossil fuels, have deployed more than 500 participants to the COP30 climate talks, an NGO list has shown. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2025/11/17/climate-change/carbon-capture-cop30-ngo/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #climatechange #carbon #cop30 #emissions #climatechange #environment #brazil
The Luxon government has come up with a brilliant idea. They intend to make NZ a dumping ground for dirty vehicles. They'll reduce the Clean Car Standard by 80%, because NZ doesn't have enough air pollution, apparently. This RNZ story gives an example.
"For a big diesel SUV, like the Ford Everest, importers could save almost $7000 per car."
As far as I can determine, the only "winners" will be car importers. The rest of us will have to put up with more high-emission vehicles on our roads and the toxic fumes they emit.
You can almost imagine National passing around bottles of petrol at cabinet meetings so they can all have a little sniff.
National - shitting on the environment is what we do best.

"So you’re arguing that they’re environmentally unsustainable, rather than, say, economically unsustainable."
"Climate change will not be stopped by throttling the economy. That would only lead to marginal slowing of it and the total incapability of ever fixing it. It is castrating civilization. The only way is massively expanding the economy and technological progress in order for it to become a trivial challenge. China will be net neutral before any serious western economy."

"The transistion to renewable electric power sources has been moving fast enough. Many feel we passed peak carbon emissions and many others suggest it is only one more year. While there are still low hanging fruit (cough, coal seam fires, cough), fossil fuel is no longer used for electricity and is being phased out for transportation. We may enter into a world where energy becomes like clothing: cheap enough to get enough that its not a worry."
