Since the nuclear disaster, Fukushima has become a powerhouse for renewables in Japan. But the prefecture is still pursuing hydrogen as a key cog for the energy transition. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2026/02/02/energy/fukushima-pushes-hydrogen/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #energy #fukushima #solar #hydrogen #renewables #emissions #fukushimahydrogenenergyresearchfield
Japan’s latest row with Beijing has brought fresh calls for the country to reduce its reliance on China for cleantech, a sector in which its neighbor is dominant. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2026/01/18/energy/china-solar-supply-chain-issues/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #energy #solar #energy #china #chinajapanrelations #sanaetakaichi #renewables #climatechange #emissions
🌏 This is THE thing that some people really really don't seem to get:

Although the growth rate (%) of global CO2 emissions has gone down, the increase in absolute terms is still pretty much a straight line:
On average, we're increasing the amount of CO2 that we dump in the atmosphere by around 450 million tonnes every year. Making the climate crisis worse faster.

New #research shows rising hydrogen emissions since 1990 have indirectly intensified #climatechange and amplified the impact of methane. Limiting #leaks from future hydrogen #fuel projects and cutting methane emissions will be key to securing benefits from hydrogen as a clean-burning #alternative to #oil and #gas.

More problems with energy usage in the booming data centre sector:
it now seems due to supply chain problems (and waits to get energy supplies sorted out for new builds), data centres are turning to diesel generators & repurposed aero-engines for on-site power.... further increasing the emissions that stem from AI-related technology.
It really is as if the TechBros think they have a lifeboat which will whisk them away from the climate crisis!
