It has been a decade since 195 countries committed in Paris to limit global temperature rise, and France has since embraced a leadership role by placing ecology at the center of its energy policy. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2025/12/28/world/ten-years-after-the-paris-agreement/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #commentary #worldnews #cop30 #cop21 #parisagreement #climatechange #carbonemissions #emmanuelmacron
Am 12. Dezember 2015 haben sich 196 Länder darauf geeinigt, die Erderwärmung auf deutlich unter 2 Grad zu begrenzen.
Zentrales Prinzip: gemeinsame Verantwortung.

Hundreds of people across Japan have sued the central government seeking damages for "unconstitutional" inaction on climate change, saying the country's "grossly inadequate" response jeopardizes health and livelihoods. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/12/18/japan/crime-legal/climate-change-lawsuit/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #crimelegal #japanesecourts #climatechange #environment #emissions #un #parisagreement
Ten years after the #ParisAgreement was adopted, the world is still heading toward a breach of the 1.5°C limit.
Clean energy is advancing and projected warming has fallen, yet governments continue to approve fossil fuel expansion and fall short on ending deforestation.
The next decade will decide whether the Paris Agreement holds in practice or fails.

#UN #climate talks fizzle out 10 yrs after #ParisAccord
Nearly 200 countries reached a weak agreement Saturday at the United Nations climate talks in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest. The deal represents a win for the #oil, #gas & #coal industries because it makes NO MENTION of curtailing the use of #FossilFuels, the main drivers of #ClimateChange.
#Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio #Lula da Silva, with the support of about half the countries, had pushed for a road map for ending the use of #oil, #gas & #coal.
#Trump, who is withdrawing the #UnitedStates from the #ParisAgreement, refused to send negotiators to the event. Even without the Trump admin present to champion #FossilFuel interests, the measure faced stiff opposition.
A new Greenpeace report shows the G20, responsible for most global emissions, is far off the action needed to keep the 1.5°C climate limit within reach.
Millions of people are already living through worsening climate disasters, from fires to floods to deadly storms.
The analysis finds that none of the G20’s 2035 climate plans include a credible fossil fuel phase-out, even though fossil fuels are driving the crisis.
This gap puts the 1.5°C climate limit at serious risk.
Inside the #COP30 venue in Belém, Greenpeace built a fragile cardboard Eiffel Tower to show how the COP21 #ParisAgreement is under threat.
The message is clear: governments must act NOW to keep the 1.5°C climate limit alive.

Global fossil fuel emissions are set to hit a new high in 2025 and curbing warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius from preindustrial levels would now be essentially “impossible,” according to new research. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2025/11/13/climate-change/global-fossil-fuel-emisisons/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #climatechange #emissions #climatechange #parisagreement #globalcarbonbudget #earthsystemsciencedata #elnino
The U.S. retreat on green commitments will damage the potential for global impact as well as the overall mood at the upcoming COP30 talks in Brazil, EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra said. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2025/11/03/climate-change/trump-pivot-climate-eu-hoekstra/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #climatechange #eu #climatechange #wopkehoekstra #europe #cop30 #us #donaldtrump #parisagreement #emmisions
The world's top court may not be able to compel states to halt planet-warming emissions, but experts say its momentous climate decision gives potent political firepower to campaigners. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2025/07/26/climate-change/world-court-climate-ruling-focus/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #climatechange #climatechange #icj #emissions #environment #parisagreement
"Global surface air temperature change versus preindustrial level is a primary metric of global warming. Its 20-year mean serves as the indicator of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to monitor threshold crossings like of the 1.5 °C target of the Paris Agreement. Here we introduce a new benchmark timeseries 1850–2024 and projection to 2034 for this key metric, which shows a clear exceedance of 1.5 °C in 2024 by the annual mean (1.62 [1.55–1.69] °C). The 20-year mean still stayed below 1.5 °C (1.39 [1.29–1.49] °C) but is set to cross this threshold in 2028 [2025–2032]. Given this imminence, we propose improved quantification of the Paris goals by a simple four-classes definition (Paris compliance Target-1.5 °C, Well-below-2 °C; exceedance Risky-below-2 °C, Exceedance-2 °C) combined with a reliable tracking of goal compliance based on current and projected global warming levels."
