A while back I suggested creating a P2P voice/ video calling feature for Delta Chat. Well, good news everyone! #TIL something along those lines has been developed, and is in active testing for a future release;

Reading further down the page I realise the experimental calling in Delta Chat only works if one of the people making the call uses a Chatmail server. If everyone is using standard email servers, no dice. That's disappointing.
But still, it's a prototype. Great that it's working at all. Perhaps solutions can be found for initiating calls over bog standard web servers? Anyone out there well versed in online telephony protocols?
At the time, I suggested using whatever combo of protocols Jami uses. Since both 1:1 and group calling were working better than most other features in the app, including text chat(!);

Would still be cool if Delta Chat calling could interoperate with Jami and other P2P chat apps with realtime calling. Something to consider for future development.

@strypey The current approach was chosen to reduce complexity in testing/debugging calls EG just yesterday it became clear that ios 14 and 15 have differences with one being able to receive a video call, the other not. Not to speak of Android and Ubuntu Touch which have their own set of challenges.
As to WebRTC, it's not set in stone. We are in continuing discussions with @n0iroh folks to switch in their evolving P2P networking stack that is already used for #webxdc realtime communications.
