A while back I suggested creating a P2P voice/ video calling feature for Delta Chat. Well, good news everyone! #TIL something along those lines has been developed, and is in active testing for a future release;

Great work @delta devs!

Reading further down the page I realise the experimental calling in Delta Chat only works if one of the people making the call uses a Chatmail server. If everyone is using standard email servers, no dice. That's disappointing.
But still, it's a prototype. Great that it's working at all. Perhaps solutions can be found for initiating calls over bog standard web servers? Anyone out there well versed in online telephony protocols?
Missed @ben's keynote at this year's @fediforum? Here's the full transcript. "The opportunity right now isn't to build a better Twitter or to provide a nice place for people who care about Linux to chat: it's to build infrastructure that vulnerable people can actually use to organize, to communicate safely, and to build community. But we can only do that if we're building with those communities from day one, not building for them based on our assumptions about what they need."

Today we have #ActivityPub, which provides real and actual #Federation, but is overly complex and difficult to implement, and we have ATProto, which promises Federation, but delivers central control and is even more complex and difficult to implement.
See this discussion (you'll need to scroll down a bit to find my contribution):

Dave Winer would love the point I was making there…
