Microslop's CEO is on a roll!

Few weeks ago he begged us to stop using "slop" because it makes AIs sad. Days ago he complained "AI boom might falter" if we don't start using more spicy autocomplete. blobeyes

Now he's begging developers to "do something useful" with lying machines, or they might lose the "social permission" to boil the planet. blobcatgiggle
https://www.techradar.com/ai-platforms-assistants/microsoft-ceo-urges-ai-developers-to-get-to-a-point-where-we-are-using-this-to-do-something-useful-or-lose-even-the-social-permission-to-generate-these-tokens

What, is Microslop's Slopilot services not useful enough on their own? blobcatthink

In unrelated news, Microsoft is asking Microsoft Windows users to uninstall a recent Microsoft Windows update, issued and published by Microsoft, because said update is breaking Microsoft Windows.
https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/microsoft-urges-uninstalling-the-update-kb5074109-after-bug-reports-on-windows-11-heres-how

Every single piece about this should be mentioning Satya Nadella bragging how 30% of new Microslop code is AI-generated:
https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/29/satya-nadella-says-as-much-as-30percent-of-microsoft-code-is-written-by-ai.html

Not providing this context is journalistic malpractice.

@uriel and I am not claiming it has.

But there is also NO evidence that the patch was developed without generative tools. And the CEO of the company that developed that patch is very gung-ho on how much "AI" Microsoft uses, in a clear attempt to pump up the bubble.

He does not deserve the benefit of the doubt here. He doesn't get to have his cake ("we use so much AI!") and eat it ("you can't prove that this specific failure was caused by AI!") too.

Which is why this context is needed.

@rysiek As shitty as this is, and as brainless as they are, that is NOT what Nadella said. What he said was that as much as 30% of code was generated by “software.” You could have generated header files or JSON configs in a repo and meet his definition. It’s just that all the headline writers and journalists WANT to say it was written by AI and Microsoft has no interest in correcting them.

I don’t know much about Windows coding, but I get the impression that there are a LOT of machine-generated code files. And let’s notice the “probably” that is doing some heavy lifting in that sentence.

The quote: “I’d say maybe 20%, 30% of the code that is inside of our repos today and some of our projects are probably all written by software,”

@paco you are technically correct, the best kind of correct!

However, he said this at an AI developer event, while talking with Mark Zuckerberg about AI code generation. Based on that context I find it pretty reasonable to understand this as "written by AI."

Sure, a lot of media interpreted it that way. But I doubt anyone at the event interpreted it in any other way, as well.

And Microsoft had months by now to clarify. So I am going to go out on a limb and say that was the intent there.

@paco also:

"Nadella added that the amount of code being written by AI at Microsoft is going up steadily."

"Nadella asked Zuckerberg how much of Meta’s code was coming from AI."

So the context was very clearly genAI.

@lastofthem @transcendentempress shitty algorithmic data analysis that corporate middle managers can perform, to be more specific.

Also, for OpenAI (in which Microsoft is heavily invested) it used to be "we build AGI, it tells us how to make money"; now "AGI" is "not a useful term", and ads are being added to ChatGPT. 🤡

@rysiek @transcendentempress I mean, bless their little hearts, but the ‘innovative AI applications’ they come up with are basically a Pandas query or two. Sometimes just regex.

@rysiek @catsalad They are burning through so much cash right now, they will never recover it. They’re just hoping someone somewhere will come up with a novel use that only AI can solve, and if they’re not able to find that use within 12-24 months, everything will implode.

@ramsey @rysiek @catsalad

Now and then, while I'm waiting for the kettle to boil for a mid morning cup of tea, I spend time staring out the window and wondering if they have they captured enough individual politicians/governments to ensure bail outs when the bubble is no more. The next round of " too big to fail".

I also hope there is a widespread community of smart cookies actively brainstorming, planning and designing good uses of the infrastructure and resources that will be abandoned.

@Gupperduck @rysiek @catsalad I think the answers are: yes, they will bail them out, and no, no one will put the infrastructure to good use. This is not to say someone won't come up with a good use for it. It’s just that I do not have faith that the people who own the infrastructure will listen; they’ll find something else to chase with it.

@ramsey @Gupperduck @catsalad I believe there is still unused fiber in the ground laid down during the dot com bubble…

@rysiek @Gupperduck @catsalad A lot of that was on purpose since fiber is cheap but labor is expensive. Since they were upgrading their systems anyway, they installed fiber well above the needs of current network, and it remained dark for many, many years. Most cities still have a lot of dark fiber that telecoms are essentially paying them not to use so they can have a monopoly on local internet services.

@rysiek "Social permission"? Did they get our permission before putting Copilot on Windows 10 and 11 machines? Did they get our permission before pushing Windows 10 on people's computers? Did they get our permission before making it nigh mandatory to have a Microsoft account to use the computer that you bought?

Fuck off with that bullshit Satya!
