The move was described by 3 people ahead of the announcement. 2 of these people said 6 offices within the dept would be shifted elsewhere; the 3rd person said it was at least 2.
#Trump signed an EO in March seeking to close the dept & asked #Education Secy Linda McMahon to work with #Congress to do so. The agency, which was created in 1979, has long been derided by conservatives as unnecessary & ineffective. But Congress has not acted on or seriously considered Trump’s request.

Offices that could be moved out of the agency include the Office for #CivilRights, which investigates allegations of #discrimination on the basis of #race, #sex & #disability; the Office of #SpecialEducation & #RehabilitativeServices, which administers the $15 billion Individuals with Disabilities Act program; & the #Indian #Education program; the Office of #Elementary & #Secondary Education, which administers #K12 #grant programs; & the Office of #Postsecondary Education.
Federal #law directs that these programs be housed in the #Education Dept. The #Trump admin is employing a work-around, the people briefed on the matter said, whereby other government agencies would run the Education programs under a contract with the Education Dept. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the changes.

The #Trump admin laid the groundwork for this change earlier this year when it signed an agreement to move career, technical & adult education grants out of the #Education Dept to the #Labor Dept. Under the arrangement, Education retains oversight & leadership while managing the programs alongside Labor, a way of sidestepping the federal #statute.
