The cookout thing this weekend was a pleasant surprise.
Some of the regulars from the cafe invited us, said it was a "potluck" with "some friends" at his "parent's place."
It was, in fact, a neighborhood/family/community picnic that has run annually for more than 70 years in a clearing on the farmland between his parent's and his grandparents, in front of the third or fourth oldest standing building in the county.
It was mostly neighbors from around that area, and friends of the parents and grandparents, with a couple of folks our age in the mix who had clearly been invited by the kids (all mid 30s, so not at all kids.)
It was a pot luck, ostensibly, and most people brought a prepared dish, but it was also a cookout and we made paella on a big open flame in what were apparently 125+ year old cast iron pans.
It was nice to be included in this decades old tradition. It was neat to meet some of the folks who have been a part of this community for most of the time the community has existed, and to be kind of informally recognized as part of the new guard.
