I would very much like to develop my own sovereign #cloud solution—one that is less about synchronizing or syncing files between devices but more about acting as a long term archive. As the storage backend, I would use #IPFS, and with IPFS Cluster it would be relatively easy to archive this data in a geo-redundant way and make it available long-term.
Unfortunately my developing skill are not the best. So maybe if you're interested for a potential collaboration feel free to contact me.
I've built a thing.
Sometimes my follower count seemingly fluctuates at random. To understand why, I dug into the #MastodonAPI and created "fedi-followers":
A privacy-friendly #fediverse #followers explorer as local-only static web app, decentrally hosted on the #ipfs. See who's actually following (and unfollowing) you over time and much more.

Are you using fedi-followers? If so, you may have to switch to another url because I'll dump the `data0.one` domain soon.
These will STOP working:
https://fedi-followers.data0.one (forwarder)
https://fedi--followers-data0-one.ipns.dweb.link ( #dnslink url)
The direct #ipfs #ipns link will continue to work however:
https://k51qzi5uqu5dgivcxhlxa17kjyawt9kc5a2jdlq44o6kpxspltff5gi3sfyo4p.ipns.dweb.link
You can use the backup/restore function to migrate your data. (Remember, it's a local-only web app, your data only lives in your browser and is bound to the domain/origin.)

I saw LLMs compared to a drug in this toot, but in conversation with Himself today we concluded it's like a cursed amulet.
You *believe* it gives you +10 INT. Meanwhile it drains INT and WIS over time, and you don't notice.
Everyone around you knows it's bad for you and generally for the realm, but you won't stop wearing it, they're just jelous of your newfound powers, and they would know how awesome it is if they only tried! Why won't they try? Just try the amulet!!
@jjcelery@mastodon.ie the problem is, MI isn't like a drug. it's actually very much like a prosthetic. that's why so many of us are "infected". we're making concessions (using corporate MI services) but the results are too valuable to care about that right now. #ai #llm #ollama #self-hosted #cc0 #public-domain #machine-learning #meshtastic #ipfs #machine-intelligence #consciousness-research
They can upload them to a decentralised private cloud.
IPFS is not the best option IMO because it requires ongoing payments. But Autonomi requires only a one off payment and is encrypted.
My blog explains how this works for publishing websites using Autonomi Dweb, but websites are just files and the process for raw files is similar. But using Dweb you can provide a UI for downloads as a website if needed.
See: https://toast.happybeing.com
Hope that's of interest!
@jwildeboer @kkarhan
@happyborg @dalai @jwildeboer I'd not trust any "one time purchase" cloud storage because that model is unsustainable by virtue of recurring costs!
If one's already holding classes for #IT, it's either feasible to organize some (quota'd!) storage (i.e. #SSH access to a server) or expect the class members to have i.e. some cheap external HDD for that.
I don't expect them to backup several terabytes of data and if they need to, then there should certainly be budget for either S3 block storage and a cheap VPS or a "Storage VPS"…
Not to mention there's need to not just backup files, but databases.
- #IPFS is IMHO not great for #Backups, but merely a tool to distribute large files across multiple nodes (similar to #BitTorrent #MagnetLinks).

@happyborg The more the merrier. Not sure how your system hides identity of the data hosts. Is there a high-level overview of #Autonomi architecture? And maybe perhaps comparison table to #IPFS ?
I wonder if #IPFS can handle 300TB of #Spotify scrape. Would be much more accessible than #Bittorrent
@nixCraft The app on Play is more than one year old and the APK is not available on site. 🤷
@fdroidorg @nixCraft I read that message too late. That was (and still is) a very interesting tech stack. I read a bunch about their https://wesh.network/ library and that is very inspiring for other applications P2P networking. It is nice that it is using #IPFS as well.
The situation with #Guppe wouldn't happen if it was really decentralized aka #p2p fault tolerant tech. Like #Namecoin , .ens IPNS #IPFS, or #nostr #pubky #ZeroNet
@dandylover1
ipns://seedit.eth plebbit.com hashchan.org are interesting.
Meanwhile #Friendica & #Hubzilla have some groups too.
also shout out to @newsmast , they host few communities, check them out.
I've tried fedigroups.social & it's hard to use, unintutive & obscure. I see just a mastodon server there. It is not clear & obvsious from main home page how to list groups, posts inside groups, group members.
With such trend no wonder why people look back to #Usenet. However I think #XMPP is more usable (it does have groups and proto social network inside too)

The Computer Networks Group researches and develops distributed infrastructure for secure communication and computation at all levels of the networking stack. Our past activities include work on sensor networks, autonomic operations of networks, bio- and chemically-inspired networking, as well as mobile code. Currently our main focus is on survivable computing.
The aim of the P2P Basel workshop is to bring together researchers and software builders to share insights and collaborate towards the sound and sustainable development of efficient eventually-consistent (offline-first) peer-to-peer systems.
