@sundogplanets it depends on the severity of the derailment; most derailments don't make the news because they don't have enough impact to cause interest (and, unfortunately, rural internet outages aren't newsworthy enough :/)
Sounds like a minor derailment that knocked over a pole line that also had had a line strung on it for telephone/internet service? Based on the length of the outage that would make sense.
@msh Thanks for this. I am amazed how often derailments happen! I mean, it's still nothing compared with road transport, but still...I thought it was pretty perfect, I guess?

For inflate-fixed subblocks it inits a decompression tree to a recomputed constant value before a invoking a shared helper with inflate-dynamic subblocks. Inflate-dynamic subblocks meanwhile parses the file's decoding-tree.
This shared helper repeatedly consults the tree decompress a value from the file to branch over. If its less than 256 it appends it to a ringbuffer & outputs it verbatim. If it is 256 it stops decompressing these bytes.

And for anything larger it subtracts off 257, retrieves the length from an array possibly summing in a few bytes according to another array, if successful calculates an offset, & copies data over from the ringbuffer byte-by-byte.
A helper for outputting these bytes performs some validation, increments some counters, & branches over the filtering mode to apply the appropriate the corresponding formula which ensures the image Deflate-compresses well.

Every time I post something from my new website, I lose followers here. Of course, it is entirely your prerogative if you don’t want to have Youknowwhat in your feed. But honestly, I find it quite sad and frustrating that I can’t talk about stuff I’m interested in on Mastodon without shedding former mutuals. It is what it is, though. (Ps I can do without snarky or unpleasant comments on this particular post. I am just saying what I feel here.)
