Damn, there are already two Fedi instances where I can’t like or reply to people’s posts 😭
I suspect it’s some kind of federation issue. Maintaining a solo instance really isn’t easy.

People can "just adapt" to a changing climate, a thousand rightwing voices keep telling us. Either they lack imagination or they don't care. Try "adapting" to this. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/a...

last night i dreamt that the big new meme and/or culture war term was "cold brain". people were like "oh that was very cold-brained of you" and then there was people who were actually proud of being a "cold brain" and then a whole other side who were trying to reclaim "hot brain" and "hotbrainedness", which then devolved into arguments about exactly what "hot" or "cold" brain even meant, with three or four competing sides who were certain their definition was the only one that made sense
@jk so are you hot or cold brained then

next #GoToSocial release (v0.23.0) will hopefully include:
- better full-text search that actually works: @kim has been working on this using an extension for our WASM-ified SQLite
- the ability to not merely connect to existing relays but to host multiple relay actors yourself, on your own instance, which other people can push to and follow
we're still deep in the code mines working on both of these things :)
@charlesatan @charliejane very fancy! What is the salad (?) with the xlb?
@bencurthoys @david_chisnall A really stupid answer to the question ("what to spend $1Tn for Science on"): it's not new science, it's just an engineering application.
For a *real* breakthrough I'd go for "build a closed-cycle biosphere capable of supporting human life indefinitely and able to scale up to > 1M people". Can't survive climate-change-induced collapse of agriculture without it, can't even *think* about space colonization without it.
And it's *much* harder than it sounds.
also if you wanna help feed and clothe us while we do our silly little #GoToSocial development work you can contribute to our OpenCollective here: https://opencollective.com/gotosocial
GoToSocial is mine and Kim's full time job, and every little bit of extra money we get through OpenCollective helps us and is really really appreciated, especially as our existing NLnet grant will be expiring soon and we have to bridge a gap before we can get our next application lined up!
so please do donate if you like what we do :)
thank you!
For the #Ækeynox projet, I’m looking for a generic term for Spanish and Portuguese. (Ideally, for all countries or languages in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.)
– ”Latin-*” feels off, as there are other Latin languages (French, Italian, Romanian…)
– “Iberica” would be a nice portmanteau word in English (Iberia/America), but just means “Iberian” in Spanish
– “Portuñol” feels either too pejorative or too specific to a latam dialect, am I wrong?
Suggestions and boosts appreciated. 🙏
@fabi1cazenave what is the context, why do you think you need it?
This traditional Chinese silver teapot showcases remarkable silversmithing, created from raw materials without heavy machinery.
#silver #silversmith #globalmuseum #Chinese
@globalmuseum So the press that makes the silverplate boiling hot by flattening is not heavy machinery.... the laith isn't either... and the acytelene is gathered from natural sources i guess...
And raw silver is often found in that purity...
This is great craftsmanship, but why do we need a pseudo-traditional story??
@davidgerard I'm seeing worrying signs in the internet chatter this month that they're trying to decide whether to pivot [back] to quantum computing or go straight for commercial fusion reactors. I suspect the latter is currently winning because "we can build cheap small fusion reactors to power the AI data centres" is an obvious follow-on spiel, while nobody quite understands the gimme with quantum.
The pivot to commercial fusion power plants is already mid-swing. See the plenty of YT videos, and even in VC-averse Germany start-ups like Proxima Fusion popping up.
Proxima Fusion is a spin-off from the MPI for Plasma Physics (i.e. they have the Wendelstein 7-X knowledge).
I toured that thing a year ago. The "auxillary" tech carries a lot more complexity than the actual plasma confinement vessel. Things like plasma heating are non-trivial.

Quel hold-up.
Quelle farce.
Quel spectacle.
Il y a vraiment des gens qui font carrière d'être les sangsues de nos démocraties dysfonctionnelles.
