Today it's #BandcampFriday, so I have extra incentive to buy a new album. My choice this week is on the popier side, though it has strong synthwave influence.
I got City of Once by W O L F C L U B. It's a nice chill album.
Hmmmm, in skimming some code I want to pull into a dumbphone...
* It appears that I can offload HTTP requests onto cellular modems: HTTP-client, tick!
* I'm planning to the pull in the high-quality bare-metal text-rendering from an ereader, which naturally supports HTML + limited-CSS as part of implementing ePub: HTML, tick!
* I'll include ArduCam just in case: Camera, tick!
I just needed to find & bookmark https://github.com/dlbeer/quirc before committing to including a QR code scanner in my project!
This tho, is great enough to beat my embargo on "country and country like music." People say music is poetry, but honestly most song lyrics taken out of context do not make a poem. This one does.

@MaddieM4 @davidgerard yea I find the "you're training/allowing yourself to use slurs because it's an acceptable target" argument far more compelling than anything to do with the LLMs themselves.
It's not a shitty thing to do because you might hurt a LLMs non-existent feelings, it's a shitty thing to do because you're normalizing hate.
@kevingranade @MaddieM4 i am deeply and passionately unconvinced this, in the face of literally every other problem in any way linked to the AI bubble, is an actual issue anyone needs to be concerned about for one nanosecond , though I'm tempted to post my long long list of AI slurs

"I feel like I'm going insane. I see so many people latching on to this idea that the mainstream developer culture matters. That being relevant to the now matters. That being adopted by businesses, start ups, and large scale projects matters. That any of the bullshit this industry and fake-ass community has excreted about how to write software matters."

Oh god, I feel this quote! I have to deal with others' false notions of "What developers want"! As if that matters.
I have a problem with this story about AI “Becoming So Powerful, It’s Stumping Those Trying to Contain It.” All the tech bros, and the reporter, suggest that the AI’s have agency here. In fact, the AI’s are being programmed and designed and set in motion to carry out cyberattacks—to “hack certain targets.”
Then there's unexpected damage!
Maybe stop doing that? But don't pretend the AI’s have gone rogue.
@gleick The AI is a lie

Also anyone still having a whinge about Green identitarians isn't paying attention. Yes, the People's Front of Judea are still out there, slaughtering strawmen, and treating politics as a if it's like The Hunger Games or the Highlander ("there can be only one!"). But they haven't had a significant role in Green strategy since Swarbrick became co-leader. The way this campaign is being run has made that very clear.

There are a few people so addicted to the visceral thrill of The Lottery that we'll never get them back. As with the pseudo-Marxist cult groups, they'll never stop forming circular firing squads, and they're best avoided.
But more and more activists are realizing that fighting the Culture Wars - on any side - only helps to undermine the respect for difference a healthy democracy relies on. We can support human rights for everyone much more effectively by not buying into them.

This whole thread is worth reading. God bless Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson for completely demonstrating how ridiculous the majority ruling was due to the fact that USPS had made a final decision.
@lancehomer thank you

Incredible what millions in VC funding can do in the right hands
NFC is a technology for communicating between 2 devices making contact. Notably NFC devices don't necessarily require their own power, things like credit cards or passports can leach power off the NFC scanner.
In many ways NFC is strictly worse than Bluetooth Low Energy, but the highly limited 4cm range does greatly improve the usability of pairing!
The way it works isn't dissimilar to a transformer: Bring 2 solenoids together & the scanner can sense the electrical load placed upon it!

Yesterday I looked at today's digital-wallet implementations & concluded that I wouldn't be able to build a drop-in replacement for any of them. Apple's closest since its local files (in a simple public format) rather than a webservice, but details on how scanning your phone works aren't public.
Hardware isn't the issue, NFC chips are extremely cheap!
Events, stores, govts, etc should be satisfied with me implementing NFC Data Exchange Format to hand a copy of the digital ticket over.

Fwiw, I like the fashion song and Closing Time out of Cohen's catalogue a lot, but I've never been a huge fan. It's not that he can't sing it's that his work is trying to recreate an experience that I really never had much interest in - being in a New York Coffee shop at 3AM and marveling at how different and yet the same we all are.
if you're into that, I have no doubt Cohen is a giant in your musical landscape. It just wasn't ever really for me. But First We Take Manhattan and Closing Time ++
