In #vr users can experience “magical” interactions, such as moving distant virtual objects with the Go-Go Interaction technique. How might we similarly extend people’s abilities in the physical world? 🪄

Through a Meta Quest 3 headset view, a user holds up their hand and pinches to open the MagicMake menu, which expands from a small icon into a full panel of virtual objects. They flick through options, skip a Coke Zero, and choose a coconut water. By reaching into the panel, they “pull out” the 2D object into 3D space. The object drops onto the desk and begins to materialize, while the menu icon shrinks back into a point. A progress effect shows the object “coming into reality.” In sync, a hidden mobile robot, also wearing a Meta Quest 3 headset, picks up a real coconut water from the kitchen counter and carries it to the desk. As the robot finishes and retracts, the virtual object fades into the real bottle, now physically present for the user to pick up.

Meta's "research prototype headsets" include one with 3.6x more pixels per degree than the Quest 3 and up to 14X higher brightness, but with a limited field of view. Another has a 180° FoV, but lower pixel density. https://www.meta.com/blog/reality-labs-research-tiramisu-boba-3-siggraph-2025-ultrawide-fov-hyperrealistic-vr/ #meta#VR#SIGGRAPH2025

Merci !

I never did a pinned intro post, so: Started in #radio 30 years ago, which transitioned to #podcast 20 years ago. “Mac OS Ken” focuses on Apple News. “The Checklist by #SecureMac” focuses on security. Did a show about #StarTrek, until the people who owned it wouldn’t pay a decent wage (no fooling). These days, all I REALLY want to talk about are #bookbinding, #fountainpens, #postcards, and #stationery. Well… and #VR. And #AR. And #Apple and #podcasting and radio.

Oh. And fuck the fascists.
