@smallcircles @Em0nM4stodon @index @zackwhittaker @StopdeGluurbril Careful with this "no glasses" campaign! There are many of us BLIND users wearing those. People should be properly informed about it. It's coming more and more difficult to feel accepted when accompanied by a guide dog - in USA and Europe there are lots of rejection cases. I'd never want to enter a shop, a restaurant, a boat, etc, and to hear "give me your glasses" - how the fuck could I read the menu then?
@elettrona
I'm curious to hear about your specific use case
@VeilleOff I don't have the Rayban Meta but the Solos. Branded with Envision Ally, a kind of AI "companion" which works like a virtual assistant who can describe environments, read texts, in short it does its best to translate visual world into voice.
True, you can do it through your own smartphone, but a wearable tech can help you looking around by turning your head, having free hands. Carrying groceries, then the white cane or the dog's handle or the human assistant's hand, and the smartphone... Then think about matter of stigma. Imagine a future where a blind could move with a pair of glasses as an aid, and possibly a belt warning about obstacles and barriers around, not noticeable by the public. You could walk without being pitied, just do what everyone does. But talking about current reality, stigmatizing a camera with no exceptions, is like stigmatizing a pair of eyes.
About eyes, people generally stigmatize the behaviour. I mean: you're not a jerk because you have a pair of working eyes. You're a jerk if you use your eyes to spy on my tits when I sit next to you, or you look at my ass when I bend over to pick up something from the floor.
We should start to treat technology the same way. There are lots of privacy concerns, people could record and send your information to the rest of the world. This is a big issue which this kind of glasses have brought.
But these banning campaigns, made just by sighted folks assuming this tech has no other use than spying, well, this is not the right direction.
I'm a woman, I'm blind, I've been harassed by sighted people and also by blind or deaf guys sex-hungry, we should criminalize eyes, hands and fingers at this point; but I think that it'd be better to criminalize sex hormons. (I'm provoking, of course).
And yes, I laugh a lot when the same man saying "you cannot say men are all criminals when you talk about murders and rapes", then says "all smart glasses should be banned because they're used to spy". Stupidity. That's the definition. Simplifying complex problems, just indulging our own fears.

Yes, that is a particularly important and sensitive subject, I agree! I can imagine these glasses are a technological marvel if one is visually impaired.
It is tricky. Big Tech wants to make this technology all-pervasive, and everyone wearing them as AR gadgets with always-on camera and face recognition and tracking built-in. That would be utterly dystopic, go much further than the camera grid that is already overlaid on society with streetcams, doorbell cams, and driving Tesla camera surveillance platforms.
I guess the best solution would be if regulators were pressured to forbid this technology for common use, while allowing those who actually require it, to gain access to these devices and get the support they need.
Unfortunately we have another case where government and politics hobbles far behind rapid and disruptive technology introductions, and Big Tech lobbyists pushing things through.

#Quicksy registrations are permanently closed.
The project was viable for a long time only because it required minimal effort. However, fighting industrial-scale SMS pumping fraud has become unsustainable, both financially and in terms of workload.
The XMPP server will remain online for the foreseeable future, but users are advised to switch their client to #Conversations_im.
@daniel will the quicksy users receive some in-app notice about that?
@nileane Spain _was_ pretty good though.
@hiiaminfi a fact not incompatible with my sentiment
Oh, dear.
Spain has won its match against France.
Now we'll just have to find out if we're facing England or Argentina.
I'm still hoping that, after all the nasty things Trump said about Spain, he's going to have to bear the humiliation of handing them the World Cup.
Unless he has the entire team executed by ICE, which in the past, would be an improbable scenario. But now, not so much. They all have hispanic surnames. And, frankly, that's all it takes these days.
@strypey @drwaus @pluralistic I would like to think that it is fair to say that nearly all EULA are accepted under duress, and should be considered invalid.
@ambientspace
> nearly all EULA are accepted under duress, and should be considered invalid
I get what you're saying. But when someone creates a new fediverse account, the admin/mod team need a way to create a binding agreement with them, about how their service is (and is not) to be used. This is an EULA.
The problem is not T&Cs per se, but their opaqueness, and the lack of legal protections equivalent to not enforcing a contract where someone 'agrees' to be enslaved.

Hi @DanielSchwering ! We have the Digital Services Act. With this, we have already taken action against TikTok's addictive design, and just last week against Meta.

Please keep up and intensify that work to protect all users and don't force age verification on all users under the guise of protecting children.
The city of #Munich is admitting that our water supply is running low. We're famous for our good drinking water which is fed by aquifers from an alpine region to the south. But that region's glaciers have been melting for a while and there's less and less snow in winter.
For the next couple of weeks there's a total ban on watering your lawn, washing your car outside of commercial car washes (don't ask, this is Germany, apparently this is still a thing), etc...
Got the stickers from @1dark1 in so I'm showing off one of my two ThinkPads. Also displayed on my machine are stickers from @wbm312, @jadedtwin, and more.
The reason there's a giant blank space top and center is because I'm waiting for the next shipment from TheGarbageFile to come in so I can see how a Malort sticker fits up there, then I can begin finishing up the stickering job.
