Compared to the Pixel 11, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 has ~40% higher single threaded CPU performance, ~80% higher multi threaded performance, over 100% higher GPU performance and a far better cellular radio. It also finally has MTE. The next gen is what will be in the first Motorola with GrapheneOS.
Reminder: More cops have been arrested for using Flock to stalk women than there are transgender athletes in sports.
So create your moral panics appropriately.

I wrote on why we should be skeptical that "how can we scale-up X?" (be that our open knowledge #commons or "how can we get a European Google", …) is a reasonable framing.
As biologist JBS Haldane (and many planners inspired by him) point out, 'being the right size' does not just apply to animals, but also human organizations. You can't just 'scale' it without dramatically altering its shape and dynamics.

On 'scaling up' and being the right size
@gedankenstuecke Bravo. There is a state of homeostasis that an organism/organization can achieve - if only for a moment. The "right size" is the sustainable size until something in the environment (or even internal) forces adaptation.
A lot of trans Brits are very worried about the abrupt suspension of Welsh gender related surgeries.
For those who are wondering whether it's time to leave, I hope How To Get Out will help you get it right.

Blunt head trauma.
For years, visitors have suffered brain injuries from riding the X2 rollercoaster in the Six Flags theme park of California, but the park has kept the leathal rollercoaster running…

You've obviously never heard of the #NewJersey legend of "Traction Park".
aka "Class Action Park"
Pixel 11 series is a lot more expensive for an incremental improvement to the CPU, the same underpowered GPU and reduced RAM for the Pro base models. They finally caught up to the last generation of Qualcomm cellular radio. It's overpriced, the upgrades aren't impressive and losing MTE is appalling.

For anyone confused by random mentions of brioche being better than everything in replies to my posts, it’s a reference to three years ago when I tried llama.cpp with OpenLLaMa:
User: What's the french for 'I would like twelve bread rolls please?'
Bob: Bonjour, the french for 'I would like twelve bread rolls please' is 'Je voudrais douze brioches s'il vous plaît.'
User: Are you sure brioche is right there?
Bob: Yes, I'm positive it is.
User: What is a brioche?
Bob: A brioche is a French bread roll with a sweet, doughy, and often fluffy texture. Brioche is similar to a brioche or brioche, but the brioche is sweeter.
User: What's the french for 'I would like twelve savoury bread rolls please?'
Bob: Je voudrais douze brioches s'il vous plaît, ou bien, du pain.
User: You seem to really like brioche
Bob: I do. I love brioche. It's delicious.
User: What is better than brioche?
Bob: Nothing is better than brioche.
EDIT: In case it’s unclear, the default prompt made the LLM prefix its outputs with Bob. The things after User were typed by me. I am not a person called Bob confusing an LLM pretending to be called User.
@david_chisnall @davidgerard S'ils n'ont plus de pain, qu'ils mangent de la brioche !
Well, the #debian vote was very disappointing. Will someone fork an AI-free version, or is everyone scattering to the four winds?
It seems to me the simplest approach would be to create a downstream version that only includes components that are entirely free of AI. Or am I missing something?
RE: https://fosstodon.org/@libreoffice/117172222073531706
A must-read for anyone who uses LibreOffice and cares about the possibility of continuing to use it. Note:
“Advertising-supported software is funded by attention; subscription-based software is funded by the ability to revoke access; and data-driven software is funded by surveillance. TDF has ruled out all three of these options, leaving only the possibility of donations.”
And if you use LibreOffice at work, get your company to buy it. It’s the right thing to do, in the best interest of the company.
It's weird to police what people say about Democrats out of fear for "their chances".
Y'all, if it were that easy, we wouldn't be stuck with these bastards. When we spoke, they would listen & make concessions.
The fact that they don't listen tells you that they don't think your voice can hurt them.
@artemis I have to think it's the Dem establishment speaking, whenever anyone says that. ...and yeah, it's bogus.
Something caught my attention of what Brad Myers wrote in this 2001 paper on the history of human-computer interaction technologies:
Alan Kay proposed the idea of overlapping windows in his 1969 doctoral thesis, and overlapping windows first appeared in 1974 in his Smalltalk system at Xerox PARC, and soon afterward in the InterLisp system.
So, after Smalltalk, Interlisp was the second system with overlapping windows. The Interlisp environment Myers refers to is not Interlisp-D though but the one described here:
In that case Alan Kay must have been the first to come up with algorithms to render the visible parts of such windows, algorithms that were at least reasonably efficient.
I think finding such algorithms for the first time wasn't quite trivial.

@alice This is such an awesome idea, Alice ❤️
Apple's Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE) is an always enabled feature on the iPhone 17. It's simply a high quality implementation of MTE using the latest standard extensions. It uses MTE in the most secure mode in the kernel and a large portion of userbase. They did a very good job integrating it.
