I understand this to be pushback against the idea that it's magical/revolutionary, but I also don't think we should be normalizing the ubiquitous use of synthetic text, let alone the surveillance infrastructure it is built on.

@woozle @bram hardware wise you want something silent, and at least capable of running what you need (CPU power, enough disk and memory).
Software side, you need to configure it with all the different software, and if you want it exposed on the internet you need to do extra careful steps.

I wonder if there are people that would like something like this, but don't have the technical capabilities and patience to set it up. Currently this type of setup is a full time hobby, and not a lot of people can afford an additional hobby, even if they would be interested.

Oh my bob, that would drive me bananas! I had an ex-rental couch for years, and a mystery quiet beep I could never locate, turned out there was a digital watch embedded deep in the couch beeping on the hour. Finally found it when I removed the couch and the new owner asked if it was my watch.

disconnects between the folks doing the work and having the domain expertise vs a board/exec team that won't listen. vast amount of unnecessary pain and drama for me, staff, and customers. i gave up.

The billionaire is a billionaire because their goal was never to have enough to live well, but to "do better" than everybody else. Otherwise they would have checked out long ago. How do you reason with people like that?

They don't think about money the way the rest of us do. They're not trying to balance basic needs and wants and feeling precarious about losing a job and with it, health care. They have other people to handle all their menial tasks and paperwork. They are secure and bored.

@madeindex another thing: many people change their writing style (as in handwriting style) over the years.

Sometimes dramatically so.

My handwriting is terrible and not really legible. It never really was that great but it’s far worse now.

I have actually wondered over the years about something: since they (I guess) no longer teach cursive how do younger people sign legal documents? This would also depend on each jurisdiction but it’s still an interesting thought.
