The luckiest photo I ever captured #SilentSunday
RE: https://c.im/@BBC/117144240968313104
Years ago when I lived in Canterbury, they brought in a phone to pay thing for parking. I wrote a letter to Canterbury city council saying this was a bad idea as someone could put a sticker over the phone number, and scam people for their credit card details. CCC said this wasn't a realistic attack, and they proceeded with the roll out.
The phone number is now a QR code.
And I was fucking right.
@quixoticgeek There was a remote rural car park round our way where they swapped out the QR code but also swapped out the support number for people worried about scams on the sticker next to it & caught folk both ways.

@mattiem The best case scenario I can see for the fediverse is Bluesky the company running out of money (https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/116697583448447818) and by that time Mastodon/fediverse implementing reply controls, better account portability, and admins getting better at handling harassment.
We'll see!
@stefan hmm yes the opt-in component is an interesting point
For.. reasons.. I am making a wealth inequality playlist. I want songs that aren't TOO aggro and could be background-ish at an event, catchy, topical, without making themselves the center of attention. Here's what I have so far. Please parse this list and suggest along these lines, if you like.
- The O’Jays - For the Love of Money
- The Flying Lizards - Money (That’s What I Want)
- Pink Floyd - Money
- Pulp - Common People
- William Shatner / Ben Folds - Common People
- Stevie Wonder – Living For The City
- Marvin Gaye – Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)
- Kareem Rahma – Really Rich Parents

- Lorde – Royals
- Pet Shop Boys – Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money)
- Depeche Mode – Everything Counts
- The Police - Driven To Tears
- Hozier - Eat Your Young

@codinghorror Durry - Worse for Wear https://youtu.be/rQf7b-jwICo
@quixoticgeek @vfrmedia @TimWardCam A place where I often park is under a shopping centre and has dreadful mobile reception. So you have to park your car and walk outside before you can pay. And you have to hope that you don't get sniped by a warden in the meantime.
@DJDarren @vfrmedia @TimWardCam there was a case in the UK where people were being fined based on anpr cos they didn't pay within 5 minutes, but it required a walk to get to somewhere with phone signal. It was like the car park itself was a scam.
'Shaderland::edition 2026' got first place in Interactive!

@mattiem I loathe "us vs. them" discussions between atproto and AP and wish there was more convergence between the two ecosystems.
Also, we can't change the nature of things - ATProto is a US-centric-ex-Facebook-sort-of-engineering (and the marketing of it) and ActivityPub comes from semantic-web-humans-bring-their-own-adventure culture which makes them ideologically incompatible. Only active roadmap and culture work on both sides can bring them closer but it may be too late
@iamkonstantin I think changing those organizations is probably hopeless. But I’m not ready to give up on a technical solution that side-steps both.
@vfrmedia @TimWardCam the fact that an app is needed to park a car is really fucking annoying. I hate it. What do people do if they don't have free space on their phone for another app ?
Esp when the apps are all just a website wrapper anyway.

TIL the Netherlands hides massive rubbish bins underground so their streets stay clean 🤯
@TheBreadmonkey that’s some strong toilet paper holding onto the bin
It has been a long time since the first comment on a YouTube video has made me laugh this much, omg, such a nice respite from the annoying-ass "who's here in {year}!" comments
since youtube is owned by the evil meta, can we somehow stop using youtube ?
🇯🇵 Japan tried to build an operating system for the entire world, then the US government intervened
「 an operating system designed at the University of Tokyo in 1984 was ambitious enough to try to replace the file system with a hypermedia document model, run on a custom Japanese CPU architecture, and encode 1.5 million characters, only to have a US trade report single it out as an unfair trade barrier in 1989 」
@mattiem That's a nice thought, but even if there was any incentive/interest on the ATProto end (eg. there is https://github.com/blacksky-algorithms/rsky/issues/125, so who knows!), and/or if there was enough funding and resources on the fediverse side, the best outcome would probably be that it would be something people would have to opt into, which is fair, but looking at how this went with Threads, I wouldn't expect many to do that.

Maybe the collapse of the computer hardware industry will trigger the resurgence of "dumb" devices. 15 years or so ago, my TV did not need RAM. Neither did my refrigerator, or microwave. Maybe, just maybe, there will be a deshittification.

I'd contend that qr codes are no worse than say, short URLs in links, and you should use a scanning application that actually lets you READ and VERIFY the encoded string/URL/URI before executing or following it, but yeah, local governments and companies should NOT be using them in public places unless the unencoded string is printed on the same sign/sticker to allow verification.
