Das erinnert fatal an den McCarthyismus der 1950er Jahre. Damals wurden nicht Straftaten verfolgt, sondern politische Haltungen. Wer als Kommunist.in oder Sympathisant.in galt, verlor seinen Beruf, seinen Ruf oder seine Freiheit. Nicht Beweise standen im Mittelpunkt, sondern Gesinnungsverdacht.
Genau diese Umdeutung erleben wir gerade wieder: Aus einer politischen Haltung wird ein angebliches Sicherheitsproblem per Definition. Aus Antifaschismus wird ein Feindbild. Wer so argumentiert, verwischt die Grenze zwischen der Verfolgung konkreter Straftaten und der Bekämpfung politischer Positionen, die den Machthabern unliebsam sind. (1/2)

@hipsterelectron for a VCS, a message digest to identify data objects is fundamentally flawed, as cryptographic hash functions are temporary on the scale of hundreds of years, and change is slow, and an incompatibility in the way we identify data objects would make two parts incapable of working together, which is something we don't want out of a collaborative VCS
@SRAZKVT so especially before i understood snapshots i was only able to think about the current state of the filesystem tree and minimizing checksum recomputation upon changes. the other big problem with checksums of directory trees (which is neither about indifferentiability, nor the interoperability goal you describe) is that if a single bit flips in a single file the entire dataset needs to be re-digested from scratch (i'm super disappointed zfs just dgaf about this at all)
@jonny I'm kind of classically trained, so I strongly agree with mypy that imports should only happen at the top of a Python file, and that they should certainly not be wrapped inside a try/except. If my module can work around failing an import, then it doesn't *need* that import.
@aaribaud there is a time for optional imports, when some functionality is truly optional and an extra feature that should be opt-in, but it makes absolutely zero sense here except for the fact that your dep is 400MB large and you want to dodge it without making your package usable if anyone normal were to install it but that doesn't matter to you because you're writing software for your internal deployment and calling it open source

Really appreciate all the kindness here. Elderly dog is overnighting at the vet, who can’t figure it out. She now has a swollen face and her back legs are not working, and our hopes rest on the vet’s best technical advice: “let’s hope she perks up”. So the good news is that it’s none of the big obvious things, and the less good news it’s not clear what it is.
It feels like a small calamity in the face of the world’s immense catastrophe, but also quite big for us.

And one more -- shame on me for leaving this out of my initial list.
These bad internet bills either require age verification (a surveillance technology) or attack encryption (a critical anti-surveillance technology). Big surveillance-capitalism companies also love them because they put a big burden on small social networks, crininalize anonymity, and require even privacy-friendly networks to share their users' intensely personal data if theydon't want to break the law.
People in fedi generally get that. And a lot of people in fedi here to get away from surveillance capitalism! @cyberlyra and the @TheBulletin crew provide lots of resources for people trying to move away from surveillance capitalism platforms. #FediPact exists! The Free Fediverse defines itself in opposition to surveillance capitalism! Sure, there are also plenty of people here who are just fine with surveillance capitalism, whatever, but there are a lot of us who aren't.
That's a huge strength. How do we leverage it?
And in the process, how can we also get more people involved in projects Tech Reclaimers?
