In case you haven't heard yet, the European Court of Justice dismissed Google's appeal last week, which means that even if they tried to get away with it, they'll have to pay the €4.1 billion imposed by the European Commission in 2018. The lawsuit focused on Google abusing its dominance by requiring distributors of Android devices to bundle Google Search and Google Chrome.
This is why we don't stop at building a decent browser, but also go the extra mile and get involved in regulatory work. Having real choices it's crucial for a healthy market.
@Vivaldi I am really hoping for GMS (Google Mobile Services) itself to take a big hit. It gives them too much control and while them getting fined for the illegal search monopoly is great I think GMS is currently in a more dangerous position with how much control it gives them over Android. Cause in every implementation except for GrapheneOS it is privileged and even in GrapheneOS's case while better it is still very proprietary (I'd personally argue malicious) code. I also don't think MicroG is a good solution to the problem. I think the only good solution is if it were either removed entirely or Google were forced to open source GMS completely (like that'd ever happen...)
And as far as I am aware (though I would love to be corrected if wrong) Linux phones still aren't quite ready for the average consumer between app compatibility, performance, battery life and stability. Which I am hoping for the situation to improve on even more to be honest on the basis of the conflict of interest that Android is owned by Google.
