The era of unchecked tech monopolies is over.
We're taking decisive action to enforce open, fair, and contestable digital markets. Our measures had real consequences:
🛡️ Fined major platforms for anti-competitive practices and ignoring consumer data choices
⌚ Required strict hardware interoperability for smartwatches and connected wearables
☁️ Launched three investigations into dominance in cloud services and into search engines hiding media

@EUCommission Good work! Keep the pressure up!

If you believe in the #Fediverse :
- post here
- bring your friends and family here
- tell companies, governments and creators to post here
- pay for your instance
- pay for your software
Do one thing every day. The Fediverse is worth fighting for.
@evan I like it because my friends and family are not here.
I'm going to whisper this. So I'll choose my words carefully. I'll use general terms but am referring to specific multiple things. Please read between the lines.
Those of you that are doing things are having a good effect.
- The media is not covering you (this is a good sign. it means they dont want to bring attention to your actions).
- They are discussing you in board rooms and in decision making meetings.
- They are saying things like "we have to pause that project at that location because its currently drawing too much attention" and "we have to reframe this announcement to downplay that thing" and "we need to try these concessions to lower the heat a bit".
They are hoping you "get tired and bored and move to a new thing" so they can get back to work without interference.
Keep doing what you're doing. Join folks that are doing things if you aren't doing anything yet. Do what you can, as you can, when you can.
It is working.
Teen2: Can I read you the opening paragraph of my essay?
Me: Of course
Teen: [reads thing indicating he has no idea how much time I have spent 'grading' AI generated essay content over the past couple of years]
Me: I ... do not want to hear what ChatGPT says about this
Teen: I swear, I didn't use Chat!
Me: I don't want to hear what ANY AI has to say. I only want to hear what YOU write. In your words. Your writing.
Teen: I ...
Me: [stare]
Teen: Ok I put it into Google. I can read you the original. But it's not as good.
Me: YES PLEASE
Teen: [reads good, human, high school essay intro paragraph]
Me: That, bro, is all I want. That is all anyone wants. Just bring me your writing. Just you. Nothing else.
Teen: But it has comma splices and stuff. And repeated words.
Me: YES. Please just bring that. I really do not want or need to hear what the predictive text machine says 1000 other people have said. I just want to hear YOU.
Teen: Ok. [Returns to read me paragraphs all evening]
every time I have to interact with CMake, my brain just goes "why is CMake like this"
The internet you grew up on isn't dying, but a commercial veneer glued on top of it is.
@tg ’s interactive essay walks you through the “boring internet” — the ugly, old protocols that build the foundations of the internet — and the venture-backed “platforms layer” that’s being monopolized.
A pyramid of ceramic test tiles showing the various tones I get from some of the different #WildClay samples I've collected. The pots I decorate with these clays are called my Earth Tone series. I began working this way in 2024.
The iron red tiles along the bottom are very similar to one another, but IRL it's easier to notice differences in sheen and undertone. Each one is unique.
Each #color is a gift from nature. All I have to do is arrange them to my liking.
The astronomy cloud computing system is down. Again.
(It is down a lot, but I don't use it that often lately. Otherwise I would complain a lot more)
Always makes me so sad that there's just buttloads of money being dumped into AI data centers so people can make awful slop no one wants, but the science computing infrastructure is held together with hope, duct tape, and someone's leftover grant money from 5 years ago.
@sundogplanets yes, at some point there's an element of faith.
The question is: how long will we be able to afford simply maintaining things as they are...?
@cmdrmoto that's for the same domain, I mean more along the lines of "I'm an expert at repairing cars, therefore I'm a master cook" (exaggerated example)
@thomasfuchs No you see, once you understand it as well as I do you see how cooking is just another corollary to the domain of car repair - therefore I am an expert chef
But it seems you’re thinking these domains are somehow separate. So maybe there’s a different fallacy you’re looking for.
#LoveMakeShare 21: What’s the most you’ve ever over-committed to a project?
Possibly that time I knitted Christmas presents for everyone in my now-wife's immediate family. Never doing that again. They get one handmade gift a year. (though if I can get myself to make both a hat for my father-in-law and a sweater for their dog, I'll break that rule for the dog.)
IMHO, this codebase is beyond repair.
#Prediction: it will take at least 12 - 15 months to clean up 95% of unnecessary use of `unsafe`.

Oh, so it turns out it's not even a 1:1 duplicate of the code, but some alternative (?) transformed version of it:
The code for `into_vec` in `SmallVec` does this:
https://github.com/servo/rust-smallvec/blob/9da26a5315c563d4de181b0be9e75d165289f81e/src/lib.rs#L1481
So the duplicated code can have worse performance than the original safe version, because it doesn't reuse the allocation (if the SmallVec has already spilled onto the heap).

@stefano while I do understand the rationale behind it, I really, really hate to be forced to allow a random web page to run programs inside of my browser.
In four of ten cases I just... leave.

FEP-baf5: Administrator Collection
This is the discussion thread for the draft FEP-baf5: Administrator Collection
This FEP introduces a mechanism for discovering the administrators of an ActivityPub instance. It extends the "Group Moderator" pattern from [FEP 1b12][1b12] and the "Application Actor" concept from [FEP 2677][2677] by defining an
OrderedCollectionof administrators referenced from the instance's application actor.
