@stefan That's true, often collaborators are harmed by the powers they are helping. They often get upset about people promoting policies that hurt them, while hurting others. So they may be demanding protection from criticism, while yelling at other collaborators. (Just think of the Trump supporters who are having their family members deported, and what conversations they might be having online.)

There is a gray area, but acknowledging the gray area doesn't get rid of the problem.

Columbia University paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to pro-Israel organizations while cracking down on pro-Palestine activism on campus, according to an investigation by The Intercept based on the university’s financial filings.

During the fiscal year ending June 2024, Columbia paid $100,000 to the Israel on Campus Coalition, $75,000 to AIPAC’s charitable arm, and $450,000 to the United Jewish Appeal Federation of New York.

Over the past decade, Columbia paid more than $250,000 to AIPAC’s charitable arm. No comparable payments to Palestinian, Arab, or Muslim organizations appeared in the filings reviewed by The Intercept.

The payments came as Columbia suspended Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace, dismantled Gaza solidarity encampments, and brought police onto campus to arrest protesters.

I had drafted this the other day with a different pop culture thing in mind, but it's also relevant today so:

I always find it strange that there seems to be a parallel tendency to provide a personal stamp of approval when (rightly) stating another community/gender/etc. than your own deserves human rights (e.g., "as the father of a daughter, I think women should have bodily autonomy" or "as the friend of a trans person, I think everyone should have access to gender-affirming care") but then to provide a personal criticism of someone's art when (also rightly) pointing out their horrid human rights views (e.g., "good riddance to them for not standing against genocide/transphobia, I think their music/books sucked anyway"). I know the intentions are good, but, like, we don't need to provide a personal justification for why we stand up for human rights. And cutting someone's art out of your life for moral reasons even though you loved it says much more than if you never liked it at all.
