I'm surprised every time I use our electric kettle powered by one of our powerstations just how much electricity goes into boiling water. I shouldn't be -- resistive loads are one of the least efficient. At least I'm charging off solar and not the grid. Even with the overcast day we're having, I've been getting in the 50-150 range most of the day so far. It'll be recharged by the end of the day.
@Unlikelylass have you seen the "Human Power Station"? I've never seen a more effective illustration of the relative power consumption of different parts of a home. it's a little dated—incandescent bulbs are no longer much of a concern—but I still found it informative when I learned about it recently. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPxuuB_ZBuk
I wonder if anybody is going to make a heat pump kettle? the recent Technology Connections thing on heat pump water heaters was neat, but I'm guessing it wouldn't work so well as a kettle
For.. reasons.. I am making a wealth inequality playlist. I posted an earlier version about 10 hours ago. This is the latest version reflecting everyone's feedback. Remember, I want songs that aren't TOO aggro and could be background-ish at an event, catchy, topical, without making themselves the center of attention. Here's what I have for V2 of the playlist. Please parse this list and suggest along these lines, if you like.

I know that Elon Musk gets a lot of hate on here, but hear me out.
I think we could hate him more. We have the capacity, we all just need to put in a little more effort.
@lowqualityfacts
Absolutely!

"The Pentagon will lay off nearly 80 percent of the staff of its Defense Technical Information Center [#DTIC], its repository of research-and-development data and lessons…A total of 40 personnel will be retained at the office."

@petersuber I finally heard from the DTIC reference desk - two weeks ago I wrote to them to ask when their public databases will be functioning again, and if they could do a search about suicide prevention initiative grey lit, in the meanwhile, for a team writing a scoping review.
If it hadn't taken two weeks, I would have thought their generic low-info response ("We expect the public tool to be restored soon and apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.") was an auto-reply.
Can’t believe August is almost over. Between moving countries, settling in a new home, and getting back into work, summer just kind of flew by… It used to be that #ATG would mark the end of summer for me in a bittersweet way but this year I didn’t go…
@Gargron from where to where did you move?
Some don't even know they're cops.
@lowqualityfacts Most are hiding under the covers anyway

wow. this is kind of unbelievable. have you ever been told something like "asymptotic analysis doesn't incorporate knowledge of the CPU cache"?
we had extremely thorough analyses of asymptotic behavior with relation to CPU caching in fucking 1990!!!! http://courses.csail.mit.edu/6.895/fall03/handouts/papers/karlin.pdf
A snoopy caching multiprocessor system is a system in which a set of processors each with its own (snoopy) cache are connected over a bus to each other and to a large shared memory.
......it was, of course, specifically to do evil shit with timing attacks
There is a single address space used by all of the processors; each location in this space is called a variable. The memory space is partitioned into blocks, groups of variables of uniform size.
i cannot believe how badly the evil number theorists are whining. this was apparently the first attempt to introduce elliptic curve factorization onto lenstra's little trick https://maths-people.anu.edu.au/~brent/pub/pub102.html
Moreover, by the “Riemann hypothesis for finite fields” [12], the group order g = |G| satisfies the inequality |g − p − 1| < 2√p.
what is [12]? i'm not sure because it's in french and i can't find it. but sir come on
