@vruz @foone Yes I knew that was the reason it was used, Jay Miner spoke a fair bit about that too (as well as cost of memory making planes easier to upgrade later). I just never knew the VGA cards worked in this way as well, still makes sense from a hardware point of view.

It's true, we *thought* we fixed account migration in Pixelfed earlier this year, but a few pesky lines of code were to blame for breaking this migration feature.

So we disabled it until we could get it right, and after FediCon, @dansup (me) made it a priority to fix along with several other important bug and security fixes!

We are in feature freeze mode, and focused on further bug/federation/performance fixes, to make Pixelfed easier to install, more stable and more fun!

Electronics can compute in parallel without living in sequential world of single-threaded imperative programming, it's a matter of physics. Memory was too slow to draw so many pixels on screen sequentially, so it made immediate sense to parallelise how you write to display memory.

Those were the immediate precursors to modern GPUs, which began to emerge a little later in the 1990s.

@onepict Here's the issue: charities have boards. These boards are populated by upper management class who bring in their big donor friends. They have incredible sway over charity exec teams. My voice is rarely enough to sway the execs. I've tried.

So I do have sympathy for charities that founder on oligarch tech. Many of these orgs are helping vulnerable people navigate hostile systems. Staff care deeply. And are too often forced to implement big tech solutions against in-org tech advice. 🫤
