RISC-V gained a lot of early adoption by replacing weird in-house ISAs that people were using for control-plane things. Most of these didn’t really have serious PPA requirements. They were a tiny fraction of a total chip so even doubling the area or power made a negligible impact on the total chip.
When I was at MS, I worked with a team to replace an Arm core with a RISC-V core. The core was around 1% of the total area of the subsystem, the subsystem was around 1% of the total area of the SoCs that it went in. The choices were:
- Arm
- Some bespoke in-house ISA.
- Some other licensed core.
- RISC-V
RISC-V won because we could get (or build) cores that we could integrate in the subsystem and license onwards (Arm would not allow us to sublicense one of their cores in the subsystem, their lawyers don’t like money unless they’re allowed to lick it first). Anything else came with toolchain-maintenance expenses which would easily be more than the cost of a core license.
The big win for RISC-V was that someone else paid for the toolchain and the licenses were lower than anything else where that was the case.
@david_chisnall @whitequark I read that OpenRISC and SPARC (and, eventually, POWER) were as open as RISC-V is now, but years prior. Do you happen to know why they did not not cut it?

@dansup Maybe it's time to phase out the block button. Muting already does most of what blocking does. The rest is make-believe, since blocking doesn't really stop people from reading your posts. The block button gives people a false sense of security, which is harmful.

I have limited sympathy for charities who trusted Microsoft to look after their data. I can only hope the providers that sold in Microsoft to them looked after them.
My sympathy is particularly limited to those who moved from independent email providers and Free software.
But then budget is often more important than long term relationships.
IT providers and hosting have long been under appreciated and in a race to the bottom.

Or they have some unhinged design constraint, like it only allows 5 titles as inputs against a generically-trained model. (In which case, maybe just skip the feature?)

Ukrainians are being slaughtered because of unhinged aggression and greed - we need to throw everything we have at the problem, get off fossil fuels, supply Ukraine with the weapon systems and manufacturing capability they need to throw the invader back to the border, and use every lever we have diplomatically and commercially to visit a reckoning upon Russia.

Years ago, I built a website for a local motorcycle shop. I just checked, and they're still using it, completely unchanged. Which is nice because, if you look at the source code, you can still see the image of the children's quad bikes with the filename 'deathtraps.jpg'
But the bottom line is, of course we can't afford to maintain public services and infrastructure. *If* we continue to piss away public money on corporate welfare, like buying $200,000 missiles that are only ever used for military exercises. When remotely-piloted drones - like the ones Ukrainian and Iranian defence forces are using - can do essentially the same job, at a fraction of the price.

The defence forces could have plans in place to requisition this production if Aotearoa ever came under attack, to produce remotely-piloted defensive drones. Just as the Ukrainians have.
Unlike those missiles we've been wasting defence money on - potentially for decades - that plan wouldn't have a "shelf life". It would cost us nothing until we need it (if at all).

Crunchyroll needs a better recommendation algorithm. It pretty much just recommends shows I’ve already watched or am currently watching, and that’s not helpful for discovering new shows.
