GRIOS welcomes new funder
Global Research Initiative on Open Science receives funding from the Gates Foundation to advance evidence-based open science policy
The Global Research Initiative on Open Science (GRIOS) is pleased to announce that the Gates Foundation has joined as a new funder. This development marks a significant milestone in GRIOS's work to promote more effective Open Science policies by synthesising current knowledge on the topic on a global scale.
With a commitment of €150,000 over three years, this grant will enable the initiative to expand its evidence synthesis activities and broaden its reach.
This is a landmark moment for GRIOS, said Marin Dacos, Chair of the GRIOS Steering Committee. With this new support, our funder group gains another strong champion for Open Science. Having this funding from the Gates Foundation also gives GRIOS a foothold in the Americas, which is crucial as we work to build a truly global initiative.
This support strengthens the overall capacity of GRIOS to review existing research on Open Science and provide stakeholders with rigorous analysis to help inform policy and practice. Currently, GRIOS is running its first call for proposals to conduct in-depth evidence synthesis on key Open Science topics, with a submission deadline of 20 July 2026.
GRIOS welcomes partnerships with research organisations, funding bodies, and other stakeholders from all over the world who share a commitment to an open, transparent, and evidence-based research ecosystem. Contributing partners are able to participate in the governance of GRIOS, set the agenda and priorities, and ensure uptake of the resulting recommendations — helping address the most pressing knowledge gaps and main policy priorities in Open Science.
About GRIOS
The Global Research Initiative on Open Science (GRIOS) aims to advance Open Science practices and policies by reviewing and synthesizing existing evidence about Open Science and identifying obstacles to its widespread uptake. GRIOS will enable funders, research organisations, and policymakers to optimise their Open Science strategies for maximum impact and effectiveness. In addition, GRIOS aims to identify knowledge gaps and federate the global research-on-Open Science communities around a common research agenda. Emerging from G7 work on Research on Research and Open Science, GRIOS is hosted by the European Science Foundation (ESF).
