A new investigation by Bellingcat has identified 115 villages in Rakhine State as partially or completely destroyed since the February 2021 military coup that overthrew Myanmar’s democratically elected government. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2026/05/27/the-lost-villages-of-myanmars-rakhine/?utm_source=mastodon

Ofcom has fined another porn site operator - in Cyprus, I think - £600,000 under the UK's #OnlineSafetyAct.
I'm struggling to think of another regulatory regime where the fines have flowed so rapidly.
(Or, I anticipate, where so few will be paid.)
@neil OFCOM's enforcement is entirely performative and overblown.
Rather like some of the content they're fining overseas orgs for, but without the alleged happy ending.
UK just sanctioned HTX/Huobi https://www.reuters.com/world/uk-targets-russian-crypto-networks-latest-sanctions-2026-05-26/
this comes after the FCA suing them for noncompliant financial marketing (which is the FCA's whole deal) https://www.fca.org.uk/news/statements/htx-huobi-legal-proceedings
i am told what's actually happening is the SEC doesn't do shit these days and the FCA is disconcerted to find itself relatively active, so they're going for it
@davidgerard The FCA is big on long lunches and he must be all right he's got all that money to pay for this lunch, so this is a major cultural shift for them.
A public library in my area in Milan, Italy, provides a cork bulletin board for patrons and neighbourhood residents to post jobs and services. The bulletin board is covered with messages of people looking to be hired for work. The are no offers of jobs or paid services.

Dear literary scholars, you cannot plausibly analyse translated poems as if they have been written in the language you're reading.
Alliteration? Assonance? Rhymes scheme? Metre? Do these things come from the original language, or are they merely present in the translation?
Case in point: Homer is often translated into English iambic pentametre, whereas Greek editions are rendered in heroic metre (dactylic hexametre). If something metrical appears to be significant in the English translation, you'd better check that it is as significant in the original.
If you don't read the original, then ask someone who does. (Or find something else to read.)

@xinit 😂😂😂 haha so true!

My nextdoor neighbour has two kittens. They were playing in the garden yesterday (possibly for the first time?) when the lightning and thunder started. I expected them to be scared, but they just had the expression of 'the ceiling in this room is much more exciting than the previous room! Why weren't we allowed this ceiling before?!?!' and then proceeded to climb onto the shed to get a better view (well, one did. The other failed to climb onto the shed). Absolutely no fear. Just fascinated by the loud and flashy sky.
I always carb load before the marathon. This morning I sat down with a chip butty, a sharing bag of crisps, and a 550g mega bar of Kendal Mint Cake. My father's running and I want the energy to cheer him the whole way.
On my way to pick up my little one from daycare.
Transitioning from "chaotic good" (cough, cough, the piece on W Social I published this morning) to "lawful good" 😇
Have a lovely day, wherever you are 🌈

With Tony Blair, the only guide to what's going on is to follow the money. In this case, Blair's taken against Net Zero because you can't run an AI data centre construction bubble without throwing in oil-burning turbogenerators—the fossil fuel industry is egging on the AI bros, and the AI bros have gotten the politicians' attention, because there's money in it. (Allegedly.)
