#Medienkritik Ich bin auf LinkedIn bei The European Correspondent auf eine interessante Datengeschichte gestossen. Es geht darum zu zeigen, wie abhängig europäische Länder von amerikanischen Big-Tech-Firmen sind. Anders gesagt: Welches europäische Land wäre am verwundbarsten, wenn Trump den „Kill Switch“ gegenüber Microsoft, Amazon & Co. anordnet?

Interessant dabei: Bulgarien wäre am resilientesten mit gerade mal 16 % Nutzung von amerikanischen Big-Tech-Firmen. In Skandinavien und in UK würde hingegen gar nichts mehr funktionieren.

Doch was wurde überhaupt genau gemessen und miteinander verglichen?

Ich habe mich etwas schlau gemacht und selber geprüft: Hier wurde nicht der öffentlicher Sektor – wie man meinen könnte, wenn es um „Nationen“ geht –, sondern 1. börsenkotierte Unternehmen aller europäischen Länder herausgesucht und angeschaut 2. welchen E-Mail-Dienst diese nutzen.

Die Zahlen hat das Genfer IT-Unternehmen #Proton erhoben.

Die Begründung von Proton, wieso sie den E-Mail-Dienst zur Aussage „Gesamt-IT-Infrastruktur eines Unternehmens“ extrapolieren, lautet: Wer einen amerikanischen Mail-Dienst nutze (zum Beispiel Microsoft Exchange Online), nutze meist – wegen der Cloud-Zwängerei durch die IT-Konzerne – effizienterweise die gesamte Office Suite des besagten Unternehmens.

Doch kann man das wirklich so sagen?

Bei den @parl.ch-E-Mails unserer Bundesparlamentarier:innen ist laut dnschecker.org Swisscom zwischengeschaltet (und prüft auf Viren, Malware und weitere Risiken) und ist der erste Empfangspunkt. Danach landen die E-Mails jedoch alle bei M365-Servern in Rechenzentren von Microsoft.

Vermutlich könnten die Big Tech-Anteile noch höher sein, oder niedriger.

Daher: Auch wenn gerade Zahlen und Forderungen zur #digitalenSouveränität en vogue sind, ist es für Techjournalist:innen ratsam, zuerst vorsichtig das Datenmaterial zu prüfen. Immer vorsichtig umschreiben, was sich daraus effektiv ableiten lässt.

Or I don't know, maybe the problem is with the fact that my host OS is Sonoma, two versions behind. It initially refused to install at all but I did get past that by downloading Xcode 26 and installing MobileDevice.pkg from it.

We look back at all of this and think, "how could people have been so incompetent back then?" Some of these things caused irreparable harm in their generation, some continue to cause harm today almost 100 years later.
