⚠️ Gmail - Google's email service has been trying to monopolize Email since its launch in 2004. They can read all their user's emails, profile the user and sell their data to advertisers. This practice goes against the spirit of Email and violates our basic data privacy rights.
⛓️💥 As a response, different companies and collectives have started offering encrypted and ethical Email services. SR recommends activists, but also just anyone, to migrate to one of these services.

✊ Let’s do it together!
- Step 1: Create an account in any of the following encrypted email services (Proton, Infomaniak, Disroot, others)
- Step 2: Migrate subscriptions etc. to new address (this can be a process in which you use both)
- Step 3: Disable Gmail as an app on your phone!
Next week we discuss further steps to transition away from big tech.
❗ If you can, set a timer for yourself to switch E-Mail provider by then (e.g. make a #Proton account).

Proton Mail Falls Under U.S. Jurisdiction
If you read their Terms of Service, at first glance, they reference the laws of Switzerland. However, because they now have offices in the United States — along with registrations, trademarks, copyrights, and patents in the U.S. — they also cite U.S. laws. The only two countries you'll see mentioned are Switzerland and the United States — nothing else.
Their CEO has, on several occasions, also praised Donald Trump. Additionally, Proton left the Fediverse because they couldn’t silence users there as they have on platforms like Facebook or Reddit. The fact that they’re now trying to silence journalists doesn’t surprise me.
There are better alternatives to Proton Mail.

If you rely on Proton's services, this makes for rather worrying reading.

But then I drifted back. Don’t remember exactly why. I use the password manager and online storage a lot.
May be time to drift away again, at least for the email side. #Proton

Another event in an irregular series of disturbing behaviors, followed by appeasing and downplaying comments.
»last month, Proton disabled email accounts belonging to #journalists reporting on security breaches of various South Korean government computer systems following a complaint by an unspecified cybersecurity agency. After a public outcry, and multiple weeks, the journalists’ accounts were eventually reinstated — but the reporters and editors involved still want answers on how and why Proton decided to shut down the accounts in the first place.«
I do neither trust nor recommend #Proton services. They're like that suspicious person where you can't quite put your finger on what's wrong with them, but you'd never invite them home.

Hey @span protonprivacy it would be nice if you could update your website. Given that both of us fight for #privacy and #opensource, we must not use the same marketing tactics like Big Techs do.
Unfortunately #Proton chose to leave Mastodon since they more pushback here than on other platforms whenever they stepped outside of the image they portrayed. Thus they sadly won't see your apt post.
(I'm still a Proton Visionary customer though, but even as such they didn't want to admit to why they left the Fediverse)

Say what you want about DHH, as a long-time Linux user I support the effort to bring Linux to the masses.
It's funny, a week ago I was repeating the joke "this year will be the year of the Linux desktop!!!", but then I realized wait, the Linux desktop is pretty good now, even for newbies.
Big credit to Steam's #Proton for making games on Linux just work. That was my last real reason to dual-boot to Windows.
My most recent Linux realization is that #Kdenlive, the open source video editor, is really good. Like as good as #DaVinci Resolve for what I use. So that's cool.
Do you know of a trustworthy email provider that is not Gmail?

For mailing lists or orgs, https://riseup.net/ or https://mayfirst.coop/en/ are significantly better, ethically and security-wise, than relying on any corporate platform.

Proton have released a new AI chat tool thing. I'm not sure why. I'd imagine they have other features that would be more in demand but seem to jumping on the bandwagon. Bit like Firefox.
Is there really much demand in their user base for this? I wonder what user research they do to prioritise their features.

🆕 blog! “Some minor bugs in Proton's new Authenticator app”
I maintain a a test-suite for TOTP codes. It contains a bunch of codes which adhere to the specification, some of which stretch it to breaking point, and some that are completely invalid. These codes are a good starting point for checking whether a 2FA / MFA app works correctly.
