Microsoft just pulled a classic bait-and-switch tactic by ending free #Office licenses for NPOs. 😡

Don't let Big Tech lure you into their platforms with their "free" offerings. Open source alternatives like Linux + Tuta put YOU in control. ✊

Because you deserve better. ❤️

Word to save new files on Microsoft’s servers by default

You already need custom scripts and third-party applications that make custom Windows ISOs to make installing Windows somewhat bearable - unless you enjoy spending hours manually disabling all the anti-user settings in Windows - and now there's another setting to add to the massive, growing list of stuff you have to fix aft

I just used this Windows 95 VM to install Office 95. Unfortunately, it doesn't have "Clippy" yet. I think he was introduced with "Office 97". Sad retro noises....

Alternatives to Big Tech/Big Data:

Windows, Apple, Google -> Linux (Debian, Fedora, Mint, Arch...)

Microsoft Office -> LibreOffice (Only Office would also work, but the founders are Russian, who knows...)

Google Android, Apple iOS -> Pixel with GrapheneOS, Fairphone 6 with /e/OS, Brax 3 with iode OS/Ubuntu Touch

OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, etc. -> Nextcloud, MEGA, pCloud, Proton Drive

Outlook, Gmail, etc. -> Proton Mail, Tutanota

Airdrop, Link to Windows -> Localsend, KDE Connect

WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage -> Signal, Element, Threema

Google Search -> Ecosia, Qwant, Startpage, Duckduckgo

YouTube -> Peertube, or as an anonymous YT client: Freetube and Newpipe

Instagram -> Pixelfed
Facebook, X (Twitter) -> Mastodon, possibly Bluesky

Truly secure and anonymous VPN: Mullvad!

This is just a first overview of the most important alternatives for switching. Feel free to continue if needed!

I used to pay £23 for #Google and #Microsoft accounts per month, just to have cloud storage and #Office.

I've since moved to #Proton for storage, VPN and email (about £10). The money saved has gone towards monthly donations to #LibreOffice (365 replacement) and #Signal (#Meta#WhatsApp replacement) - both #FOSS.

What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that if you #LeaveBigTech - and can afford it - donations to the organisations that try to keep the internet free and private would be excellent.

Last week, I got an email from Microsoft. It told me I’d be paying 46% more for my Office subscription, starting next month.

But when I tried to cancel, it offered me the same price I was already paying — without the generative AI features I never asked for in the first place.

This isn’t just deceptive; it’s an abuse of market power. I’ve had it with Microsoft.
