The enshittification continues. I remember @evan shared some thoughts about using ActivityPub to develop a federated #dating app. In some ways, it's the ultimate test for UX, onboarding, etc, in federated networks. Some challenges;
* it requires helping people meet within a geographical range
* it requires a critical mass of attractive people using it to attract others (the bootstrap problem dialed up to maximum)
* Trust & Safety are *essential*

* What are other examples of Network Institutions, past or present?
* how can we distinguish clearly between Platform Institutions (power aggregators) and Network Institutions (power distributors)? Which is Wikipedia, for example, or WikiLeaks?
* how can we design and establish more Network Institutions?
* how can we protect them from destruction, neglect (eg most of Indymedia), or corruption into Platform Institutions (eg OSI)

@novelgazer the original post and the replies don't have to be isomorphic. If I post a photo of a bus, do all the comments have to be photos of buses? No, obviously not. A "followers-only" conversation where every post is visible to each author's followers is meaningless; it's much more important and natural to have a conversation amongst a group of people.
@evan from my perspective, a followers only conversation is something I desire to be contained, with no opportunity to expand beyond the container. To me, intersection of followers makes sense. If that's not palatable to the community at large though, I could live with Alice's followers only.
