In this lab report, we consider one way to look at the architecture for the itemized user environment: a layering that has been happening since the dawn of time.

Some harbor an inclination toward a “grand design” in the construction of a new operating system’s user environment; a sort of “turtles all the way down” architecture that features one substance, or one core primitive, which defines the mechanics of an entire computing system deep under the hood and up into userland.

I’m more inclined toward the “layers” which we’ve been stacking up since we first made the jump from hard-coded circuits to programmable, general ones (and on which we have built many new layers — machine code, assembly, low- and high-level programming languages, and so on).

Each layer adheres to the contract of the one below, and offers a new way to think about things to the layers which will be built above. This is how we’ve bootstrapped into all of modern computing starting from simple logic gates, in a slow, evolutionary construction.

This isn’t just the way modern computing came to be; it’s the way our physical world came to be, too! This “layering” is how our world has evolved into the one we know. @juliewebgirl @virtuous_sloth sure, but there is a significant difference between calling something a "war" colloquially, and then formally declaring actual war, which is a move that changes the legality of lethal actions.

Those terms are not "weird terms" that Trump has come up with.

They both have existed since the 1980's.

What *IS* new is that this year, by executive order, "foreign drug cartels" are now classified as "foreign terrorist organizations".

No new terms, only new designations.

It's not a strong argument if you yourself are coming up with weird conclusions that are not accurate.

Couple of years ago we got a new coworker who was really confident but just had this bad habit of making stuff up that sounds good to meet a deadline and seemed incapable of admitting that's what they were doing, so I just never gave them anything to do if I wanted to know something was done right, which is all of the time. No one in the office really talked about them.

Anyway, at a work conference today, we've been told that actually we should be using this lying coworker as much as we can and spending our time checking if what they said is sound as well as doing our own work. This is because it will eventually make us more productive even if it appears to slow us down to start with. The coworker is here to stay with the promise they will definitely get better at some point and all the money going to them will pay off at some point so we need to learn to get the most out of them.

For instance, a presenter at the conference had asked our lying coworker to pick a number from 1-50, and it turns out they always pick 27. When prompted why, they'll tell you a whole bunch of reasons, such as it's a cube number, it's in the middle but not exact, etc. Clearly bullshit, but everyone in the room seemed to accept their explanation. Why would they even need to explain that if they weren't constantly trying to cover their ass that they don't know what they're doing?

When Yann LeCun, Meta computer scientist working on AI, said that AGI is a fool's dream with current technology, Mark Zuckerberg made his life at Meta difficult, and now he is leaving. Several other high-profile leaders have been skeptical of AGI. Marc Benioff said that he was "extremely suspicious" of the AGI push, analogizing it to hypnosis. Google Brain founder Andrew Ng said that AGI was "overhyped," and Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch said that AGI was a "marketing move".

Everest ransomware gang claims breach of ASUS

The Everest ransomware group claims to have breached ASUS, allegedly stealing over one terabyte of sensitive data including camera source code, internal documentation, and databases. The group has issued a 21-hour deadline for ASUS to respond via encrypted messaging, threatening to publish the data. ASUS has not yet confirmed the breach.

Orion was a neighborhood feral I'd fed daily for months. After six months I realized how much I'd miss her if she didn't show up and took responsibility for her. Through a local non-profit Trap-Neuter-Release agency, she was neutered, vaccinated, and flea-treated. Our relationship began.

I was uncertain if she'd adapt to indoor living and was resigned to resuming our "old" relationship if necessary.

At this time last year she was hiding in the back of a small drawer most of the time. She was frightened, I couldn't touch her.

We built our relationship at her pace. I never tried to grab her. It took months before she initiated contact, longer before I could pet her, and look at her now, cuddling on my lap!

Silly kitty's favorite food: raw kale. She asks for it, steals it, jumps into the fridge to nab it, and prefers it over cheese.

Although she's still timid, she's also affectionate, playful, and delightful!

I'm glad she came to live with us.

A more minor thing, but one that still bugs me: Trump, for all his bluster about the shootings of the guard troops he sent to DC, has remained at Mar-a-Lago this whole time. He won't return to Washington until Sunday.

He never returned to visit the bedside of Specialist Beckstrom before she died. He hasn't visited Sergeant Wolfe. He hasn't personally offered comfort or gratitude to their families or performed any of the usual post-tragedy gestures of leadership.

Instead, today he went golfing.
