Never leave home without it
Today I am stepping down from my role as the CEO of #Mastodon. Though this has been in the works for a while, I can't say I've fully processed how I feel about it. There is a bittersweet part to it, and I think I will miss it, but it also felt necessary. It feels like a goodbye, but it isn't—I intend to stay on and continue to advise the new leadership and contribute, because Mastodon—and the fediverse—is one of the very few beacons of hope for a better web.

@Gargron you’re amazing. This is a story I will tell the kids.
Folks, if you want to donate to our Gaza Verified families but don’t know who to donate to or are overwhelmed, here’s is a list of all the families, sorted by those who have raised the least in the last seven days:
https://gaza-verified.org/donate/
(The list is based on @fabio’s API¹. It’s also Fabio’s birthday today so wish him a happy birthday, why don’t you and thank him for his excellent work?) :)

"(...) a new study finds that raccoons living in urban areas are physically changing in response to life around humans—an early step in domestication."
@enverdemichelis è fatta, a breve il raccone domestico sarà realtà!

Is new Vic Liberal leader Jess Wilson part of the party’s terf faction?
I only care because somehow my phone number is on their push polling database and I want to be accurate about the accusations I fling at them.
@ahltorp Agreed it's not the complete picture, but all the other data (not in this toot) pulls in the same direction, and these trends have been stable for a long time.
keep in mind that this is all smart metered. they have hourly data from my meter to measure how much I've used, with historical data going back years. but because they based the model on typical usage it completely breaks when faced with near-constant energy consumption throughout the year, thus doing the opposite of what the model was supposed to do.
@gsuberland
Clearly they need more data /s
It's just so annoying that all companies seem to believe they need to become data driven (meaning they need to collect MORE data) without being capable to use the data they already have in a beneficial way 🤬
@Soldusty @TheRaDR Of course we can have different oppinions on the point where dehumanising starts. The way the billboard is designed suggests dehumanising on a deeper level and just because we are upset about the wrong doing of the billionaires for which they should be called out and even kept responsible for, doesn't make it right nor that we want to applaude in a first and maybe even second reflexe or out of anger about their behaviour and actions which led and leads to a lot of suffering.
@charmingLiisa @Soldusty @TheRaDR an interesting point from Cory Doctorrow @pluralistic yesterday on BBC radio4 - if we eliminated Musk tomorrow, he would be replaced by someone very similar. The problem is that we have a social system that contains Musk or Zuckerberg or Gates or Warren Buffett shaped holes in it. It's a while since I heard the slogan #systemchange not #ClimateChange
Good night to everyone: https://t.co/xCR6oL0sDM
@slightlyoff The first chart is talking about sales, and your text is talking about installed base. Those might be connected, and your statement might be true, but using this chart in support of your statement is misleading.
What happens to a man when he wakes up in the morning, listens to a meditation app, works out, takes a shower, and looks in the mirror…and also he’s a trillionaire?!
My sense is that money, fame, power, success, art, family…none of it means a damn thing anymore. It’s like approaching the event horizon of a black hole. The forces of gravity will turn nature inside out. Nothing will make sense, because how could it; if light cannot escape, how can your sanity?

@jdp23 IMCOTF (In My Corner Of The Fediverse), the discourse around QTs wasn't specifically around QTs, but more in general about whether Mastodon should cater to the clout chasers “VIP”, which would have brough over more people (their followers), even at the cost of opening up to new venues of abuse, which is how QTs were perceived.

@jdp23 IMCOTF, it was at *this* point that I started seeing that the discourse transitioned into a race thing, as the Black community remarked that they'd been using QT in a non-abusive manner on Twitter and the general response was «nobody gives a shit».
Which BTW was the reason I came out with https://sociale.network/@oblomov/110283781278976674 and https://sociale.network/@oblomov/110469501308245406

Punjab farmers are shifting from burning stubble to recycling it into biogas, fertiliser, and cardboard. The change is early but promising, and it could transform North India’s winter pollution cycle. #Pollution #Punjab #Sustainability
OMG, I just saw a commercial for Skechers for Kids that had a secret compartment that contained a tracking device so you can "always know where your kid's favorite shoes are."
WTF.
They all are: TT, FB, Twitter, LinkedIn,...
Elecom Huge Plus trackball mouse supports USB, Bluetooth, and 2.4 GHz wireless connections
The Elecom Huge Trackball Mouse is a computer peripheral with a name that pretty much tells you what it is: a trackball with a really big ball. With a diameter of 52 millimeters, it’s the largest trackball Elecom sells (although it’s not the largest from any company – Kensington’s Expert Mouse TrackBall has a diameter of 55mm).
Elecom has been selling the Huge trackball since 2017, and now […]

Good eve fediverse denizens! I'm Kit, a queer disabled history student with a love for old books, antiques and open-source knowledge!
I am rapidly approaching my 40th year on this planet and am going through the slow process of getting my undergrad (mid 3rd year right now) while juggling my disability.
I am currently calling Scotland my home and speak both English and French, so tend to share knowledge in either of these languages.
My area of interest are vast and having to find a 'speciality' is the bane of my existence. I tend to prefer anything pre-1900s but post-BC. Japan is a particular country of interest but I don't let that stop me. I love domestic, queer, and disabled history, to name but a few.
Looking forward to meeting fellow historians, history lovers, open knowledge sharers.
