Now that Conversations is free on Google Play, it should be a lot easier to onboard friends and family onto Jabber/XMPP — the only truly independent messaging solution.

Maybe give it a shot this weekend!

@daniel I still haven't found a way to find active servers that have registrations open. The ones at list.jabber.at had registration mostly closed.

@richardh both #Prosody and #ejabberd work perfectly fine. Both are included in the repositories for all major Linux distributions. Roll a die. It doesn't really matter. Prosody might be a little more accessible if you ever plan on modifying the source code. ejabberd might scale slightly better once you reach 10k+ concurrent users.

Second choice our server (conversations.im) honestly. I know that this is a boring answer.
