A walk among giants.
I spent several hours in beech woodland on the slopes above Loch Libo yesterday, where the sunlight flickered through the dense canopy.
Beech understory is always rich in fungi, the soil beneath dark and fine from decades of leaf litter fallen at the massive feet of these ancient beings.

An image taken from ground level looking directly up along the towering trunk of an ancient beech tree, its mighty branches spread wide to touch those of its neighbours and forming a thick canopy of leaves. Only the wind moving the branches allows the sun to penetrate this shady kingdom.

Bright sunlight occasionally pierces the beech leaf canopy, backlighting leaves on the edges as the wind makes the branches sway. The music for this dance is a constant whisper.

Rich loamy soil created by decades of decaying leaf litter and beech mast husks is perfect territory for fungi to thrive, their subterranean mycorrhizal network connecting the trees mirrors the outstretched branches in the canopy above.

Like the massive feet of dinosaurs, these enormous beech trees root themselves deeply on the steep slope in this woodland, clinging to the land through winds, rain and cold, surviving each year to thrive again.
