Why can’t they just make a threadiverse community? Seems annoying to have to make another account on another platform to participate…

You don't have to be on mastodon.radio to follow or interact with its members or threads.

The idea is to give people a server that that matches their interests, and features that may relate to their interests. They're not closed off from the outside world.

It's not a forum or discussion thread, it's a social network server. You can follow individuals from the server just like you would follow any account on here.

You can browse individuals on the server who have opted into its directory at https://mastodon.radio/directory

If you find someone you want to follow, copy-paste their address into the search box and that should bring up their account on your server.

So we’re back to my original point, if you want to follow the community (not individuals), you have to sign up with an account on that instance.

I'm not clear on what you're wanting to follow? Do you mean the Local timeline?

Some third party Mastodon apps allow you to follow the Local timelines of other servers even if you're not a member of them (Fedilab, Subway Tooter and Moshidon on Android, Ice Cubes and Mona on iPhone/iPad).

If you just want to browse a server's Local timeline, you can go to its website, e.g. https://mastodon.radio/public/local

I want the follow the community. I understand how it all works. I just don’t think it makes sense. If you want a community, make a community on the threadiverse where everyone can follow your community without regularly navigating to your instance, without specific software, and without yet another account.

PieFed has a slightly different purpose?

Mastodon is more of a Twitter-type thing, PieFed is more of a Reddit-type thing. It's difficult to directly compare them or say one is better than the other, because they are doing different things.

Part of the idea of the Fediverse is that people can follow and interact across different platforms, so e.g. people on PieFed (Reddit-like) can follow people on PeerTube (YouTube-like) or Mastodon (Twitter-like) or whatever.
