Ham Radio's role -- the search and rescue team was unable to contact their command post, but used ham radio to relay emergency traffic:

"Because of the dense forest and canopy in the remote location, the rescue team was unable to communicate with the command post that the pair had safely been found.

“They utilized an amateur radio frequency, commonly known as HAM radio, to establish communication,” officials said. “After broadcasting ’emergency traffic’ on the HAM radio, their call was immediately answered by a retired El Dorado County Communications Supervisor who was a HAM operator monitoring frequencies from his home. This HAM operator then contacted the El Dorado 911 center, which provided the information to Calaveras Dispatch, and the SAR command post was notified.” "

Giant discussion on our local #hamradio mailing lists on how to work around Winlink/VARA only working on Windows and not Linux, and the problems with running it on Windows 11, etc. etc. etc.. (ostensibly this is all going to be used under emergency/disaster conditions 🙄 ). The first thing to break in disasters is proprietary stuff you've had to hack around to get working. KISS, people, and stop adopting technology which is not open source. #gripe

I had a short QSO with one of the POTA volunteers on 20 tonight. In the chat it came up that 90% of the backend code and database stuff I wrote (a bunch of the SQL in the DB, and a lot of Python, for the award issuing and certificate generation, the Park to Park matching, and other stuff I don't recall) is still in place today.

This either means:

I wrote good code, that's still reliable several years later

OR

I wrote a total trainwreck that no one can figure out to replace😜

@relistan Very tidy construction. I too ordered some RG316 but it's very stiff and I'm hesitant to bend it tightly around the (I guessing) FT240-43 core. I also have some RG174 which is much easier to bend.

Is there any particular reason for using RG316 instead of RG174 as the losses in the short length used will be very small, and the breakdown voltage (at least with 100W) shouldn't be a problem?

Hmm, free mystery antennas. One is 58 inches long, the other 68 inches. Apparently mounted at some point on a facility of a major defense contractor. Looks like a trombone, ha ha. #antenna #mystery #hamradio

I found an extra copy of this book laying around while cleaning, if anyone in the U.S. would like it, I'm happy to ship it to you for free (basic USPS shipping)

the only two things I ask:

you actually use it to study for your Tech Exam, AND, please pass it along to someone else for free

I've already asked in some smaller circles, but most people already have their licenses, heh

first come, first serve

EDIT: The book has been claimed!
