It responds to the mouse, all's good! Now let's hook up the equipment...
Nothing. The software doesn't acknowledge the connection, and the equipment doesn't enter diagnostic mode as it should.
Linux itself can see it, and the built-in tools all helpfully relay VID and PID numbers, but nothing is making it through WINE.
Research seems to indicate that USB-hid support in WINE is not fully realised and even giving my user full permission over the USB stack fails

So at this point I start looking to purchase another cheap Windows portable.
Then, finally, another bit of research points to "Bottles." This seems to be something close to a manual method for achieving what the SteamDeck does, so perhaps it handles USB better than bare-bones WINE if it has to manage game controllers and the like.
Again, it's in Mint's software library, so I remove WINE itself and all my fruitless tweaks, and install Bottles.

To start with, I don't understand what I'm doing. There's an assumption that I want to set up a game, and that it'll be one that Bottles has an optimisation/installation script for.
After battling for a bit, I figure out how to create an "empty" bottle. Then, I'm able to drop my semi-portable application into its file system. There's even a neat way to set the environment variable!

I've been coy about the "equipment" and the software and exactly how I manage to run it at all, because although I paid a large sum to purchase it from an approved dealer, the company who supplied the parts of it that need the config changing seem to still believe they own it in some way, and that I should not be allowed to manage it myself.
I believe they are wrong, and I'm now in the position to assert that belief for myself, but I can't for others.
