The EU is a democracy in the same way X Corp would be a democracy if they provided daycare and called it the X Corp Parliament.

(The EU Parliament is the only parliament on the planet where its members cannot legislate. All they can do is vote on it. i.e., it’s a toy parliament. And it looks like they’re now confident enough to forego even that thin veneer of lipservice to democracy.)

As I recall, the last time there was a proposal to shift power to the Parliament, it was vetoed by the British and French. I hoped that a benefit of Brexit might be that France wouldn't be able to veto a proposed shift by itself with no political support.

@aral The parliament exists to give the people the illusion of having power in the lawmaking process. The EU is not a democracy, merely disguised as one. I would love to be proven wrong of course. But unless major change I doubt I am.

I don't want to see the EU collapse or whatever. it has done alot of good too. But the current EU leadership feels like a poor joke.
