I’m an admin on a pretty large and very active Discord server but we’ve spent the weekend getting a new self hosted Matrix instance setup.

Things are mostly working so far. Having some issues with device registration on mobile and user sync ATM but signups are working and the bones of the services seem to be all functional.

I’ll be getting our server sync scripts running this week to start syncing the Discord and Matrix instances to fully pave the migration path. We plan on likely shutting the Discord down at the end of March if everything goes well.

Ok just have to figure out what it takes to get Matrix Authentication Services up and going.

Sync works, Federation works, signups, captcha, all the rest.

From what I can tell MAS will at least make getting the mobile apps going less of a hassle.

@strypey @bflipp I use a very handy admin capability called Synapse-Admin that, for example, allows for better signup management. Last time I tried, though, it was incompatible with MAS, which was relatively new at the time. MAS seems to be undergoing very active dev so I decided to wait until a) it worked with Synapse-Admin, and b) it's a bit more of a known quantity to implement.

I’m going to give this a try for sure.

MAS documentation hasn’t been straightforward for me.

Mainly I want a seamless signup experience from Element X. It’s there for desktop and web but Element X expects better security.

@bflipp Yes, the 'easy onboarding' for mobile users is offered by integrating MAS, but for the moment, the Synapse-Admin capabilities are more important from my perspective. Hoping the community will work out a way to have the best of both worlds. That might already be the case, I have to review recent releases of both projects. @strypey

I unfortunately need to prioritize onboarding first. Especially with Discord backing off completely there’s going to little enough inertia for my users to move now as it is.
