@rysiek Good you insist. I just found an open source discord alternative, I never heard about until now, it must be quite new, its called revolt: https://revolt.chat/
> The problem is, there is no open source alternative to discord, right?
And there never will be unless we decide enough is enough and instead of agreeing to use shitty, completely insecure and privacy-hostile tools, we make the (perhaps difficult) decision to use and support alternatives – even if sometimes they lack some features.
We can also push Discord and demand they implement e2ee.
There are ways. It's really up to us.

> Why do foss communies use Discord or Reddit. Why Telegram?
All equally good questions. Not only do these too have perfectly usable Free Code replacements, they're also decentralised.
For Discorpse/ Telegrim there's XMPP and Matrix apps, and public rooms can be made available via both (and IRC). For dReddit, there's Lemmy and PieFed, which federate over ActivityPub, making them part of the fediverse.
Hello, all current #Discord users! They're changing their Terms of Service at the end of September, which means you have 30 days to opt out of the Agreement to Arbitrate in Section 16 of the new ToS:
All you need to do is send email from the one you used to register for Discord to arbitration-opt-out@discord.com and let them know you would like to opt out. Why?
Because binding arbitration is only good for large corporations, not individuals.
Please boost! #BoostsOkay
What's this
#Nepali coordinating #revolution on #Discord, almost 10,000 on one conference call
They're calling it the "#GenZ" #protests. It was sparked by a crackdown on #SocialMedia but the base frustration is #corruption, #nepotism, #unemployment, and #inequality. 19 protesters were killed on Monday, I'll spare you a viewing of that video, and Tuesday #Parliament and the #SupremeCourt were set on fire. The prime minister has resigned. The government has fled.

"If you disagree with any of the policies, you may terminate your agreement with us at any time by discontinuing use of our services and deleting your Discord account."
Email about changes to Discord's ToS, 2025
In plain terms, you can like it or leave. But at the same time, they'll do anything they can to make it hard to leave. This is what dictatorship looks like.

Good time zone Mastodon.art! We're not new to Masto, but just joined this instance, so it's #Introduction time!
#CozyCon is a creative focused multi-fandom online community that hosts monthly events, and a free yearly virtual convention on #Discord / #VRChat / #Twitch in September. We have skilled #Vendors, #DJs and #Panelists every year, sweet themed merch designed by our artists, and year-round community space to chat, organize games, share your creative works and much more.

Discord is my most used app and I hate it. Matrix has a whole host of issues and I'm done with it. IRC is fine but it's no discord.
Clearly we need to bring back XMPP
But honestly that wouldn't be a bad idea. If I get some free time I might try to make a discord like XMPP client.

Tonight, I uninstalled Discord from my system. In its place, I am going to try Revolt. I already use Signal for a small number of contacts but don't expect everyone to move to it.
My reasoning is because I have been concerned for a long time about Discord's business practices. They are trying to jam in ads and monetization wherever they can. Not only is the software proprietary, it is essentially spyware.

One thing that really pisses me off personally is the #regression in terms of #Messenger#Apps.
My personal distaste and dislike for #proprietary, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider #services like #Signal¹, #Telegram, #Discord², #WhatsApp, #Slack, #MicrosoftTeams, etc. aside:
WHY is there no #CrossProvider#Messenger to handle that shite?
WHY does everyone of these shitty providers think people want to download their #bloated#WebApp that takes up triple digit Megabytes if not entire Gigabytes and will gobble up all the #RAM and #CPU they can??
This problem ain't new and already got solved for corporate social media ages ago! (Not to mention actually good messengers!)
I mean
API 0
- style access because obviously none of the platforms will allow, endorse or support such an endeavour and actively fight the developers and users !
So yeah, consider this a call for a @gajim / #Gajim or @pidgin / #Pidginfor garbage platforms!
And it's not like people and espechally businesses are unwilling to pay for good tools, cuz not only is HootSuite still around, but @tapbots, who made the excellent TweetBot nowadays make @ivory, an excellent #ActivityPub client with focus on #Mastodon that people are willing to pay a #subscription for!
- And from what I could see from users who pay for it, they are not just happy, but it also looks and feels better than #TweetDeck in it's golden days...
Like: There's not much of a technical reason something similar to @zulip 's #TUI - based client could exit.
- Obviously #proprietary platforms - (just like #Shitter even before #ApartheidEmeraldBoy took over and speedrun it into becoming a #NaziBar) - will try to passive-aggressively stifle such #clients, but still...
If people can build #bots for shite like #discord, #Telegram, etc. then why not make an actually good client ???
I mean, these ain't like in the old days where a few Megabytes got you #Pidgin and other Multi-Protocol Clients of the old days where everyone had to implement bespoke, custom and incompatible and *often completely undocumented, proprietary * protocols like #ICQ, #AIM, #SIPE, etc.
- Nowadays all these do have some kind of #WebApp or Web Interface one can just login (because *none of them do proper #E2EE with #SelfCustody of all the keys!) so this should be way easier these days: All they do is do HTTP(S) GET/POST so the most critical part is to attain credentials like a #Login #cookie and to basically run a console on i.e. #Firefox to reverse-engineer the #API...
It just makes me wounder: Are modern messengers these days complicated or do the people who have the talent to write such a #MultiProtocolIM chosen that this is stupid and that like myself they'd never touch that shite in their life and make peace with it?
- And I'm not talking about specific #API limitations like #Discord uses to force people to use their garbage client, but like #WhatsAppWeb and others...
