Weird And Wonderful

This peculiarly beautiful place was formed when softer rock was eroded by glacial meltwater, leaving these strange upright pillars of harder material.

The result is a two kilometre long and 100 metre deep canyon where pareidolia runs wild. There are faces and creatures all around you, petrified.

Fjaðrárgljúfur¹ the "Feather River Canyon" in Skaftárhreppur, southern #Iceland.

A colour photo of a rocky canyon with a turquoise river running through it. The gully sides are very steep and the walls are jutting into the open space between them in many places. These rocky pillars are joined to the walls in most cases, and softened by heavy growth of bright green mosses on the more horizontal surfaces. Where the rock is bare, it's pinkish grey. The grassland around the canyon top is dotted with wildflowers. The sky isn't visible in this shot but there are no shadows, suggesting overcast conditions.
