Bladed

An October morning of hazy sunshine and showers. On the east coast of Iceland, making our way south, we stopped at Flögufoss waterfall.

Looking across the valley floor, I noticed that the light was perfect across the sharp rocky spines. Even the waterfall between the ridges was clear to see.

The foothills of Tó (1069 metres, 3507 feet) between Breiðdalsvík and Berufjörður in Fjarðabyggð, eastern #Iceland.

Autumnal

Between dark clouds, the sun spotlit the serried terraces tumbling down to the fjord far below.

High turrets of mountains displayed their ribs. A patchwork of highlights slid across soft hills lower down.

Everywhere around, the soothing sound of water splashing down to meet the fjord below.

October: Sunbeams, showers, and rainbows; it was a great day for photography. Mjóifjörður in eastern #Iceland.

Serenity

A crystal clear sky, not a cloud in sight.
Still, clean water broken by the wake of boats and the heads of seals.
A majestic sweep of glacial ice, curving down to the water's edge.
The nunataks of Esjufjöll standing blue-black against the white ice.
The medial moraine between the converging ice sheets, leading down to the calving snout.

Weird And Wonderful

This peculiarly beautiful place was formed when softer rock was eroded by glacial meltwater, leaving these strange upright pillars of harder material.

The result is a two kilometre long and 100 metre deep canyon where pareidolia runs wild. There are faces and creatures all around you, petrified.

These rocky pillars are joined to the walls in most cases, and softened by heavy growth of bright green mosses on the more horizontal surfaces. Where the rock is bare, it's pinkish grey. The grassland around the canyon top is dotted with wildflowers. The sky isn't visible in this shot but there are no shadows, suggesting overcast conditions.

Leeward

This beautiful and dramatic pyramidical stack of basaltic strata is a regular stop for us. It has a wonderful strength about it.

Every time we've been there, it looks different. This time, a clump of cloud had formed on the leeward side of the peak, and patchy sunlight was picking out details in the structure.

Unspoilt

No contrails in the sky, no traffic noise, no roads except gravel.
Unhurried and leisurely, with peacefulness and tranquillity.
Warm sun on my shoulders.

Shadow Play

The clouds are trying to hide the sculpted slopes, the sun dapples highlights and creates a serene scene.

In spite, the cloud sits atop the highest peak. In response the sun spotlights the neighbour.

At ground level, sunlight wins, for now.
