I often post positive stuff about @matrix here, for the same reason I'm bullish about ActivityPub. Decentralisation FTW!

But I do share the concerns about the dominant position of @element Inc. within Matrix Foundation, and the reliance on its staff for flagship software and protocol development. Especially with Element being UK-based, making it subject to Patriot Act style spying laws passed in the UK in recent years. See;

Why Matrix Fails EU Data Privacy Standards | Secure Messaging Risks

Matrix's UK ties, metadata leaks, and opaque governance expose EU organizations to GDPR and Schrems II risks. Learn why Wire is the safer, compliant choice for secure communication.

I'm aware that Wire are a commercial competitor of Element, promoting their own proprietary federation model. So anything they say about Matrix needs to be taken with a grain of salt. If @matrix Foundation or @element have published a response to this, I'm keen to read it, link me!

But as I say, many of the issues Wire list in that piece seem well-founded, and if there hasn't been a public response from the Matrix folks addressing them, that in itself speaks volumes.

The @matrix Foundation folks have responded to my posts about the issues listed in Wire's blog post, posting this link to a mid-2025 blog piece of theirs, entitled 'Dispelling myths and misinformation';

https://matrix.org/blog/2025/06/dispelling-myths/

I have yet to read this (watch this space). But I said that silence from them would be a bad sign, I thought it worth confirming that they have at least responded publicly to the criticisms raised by Wire and other critics.

I just read the @matrix Foundation response to Wire et al;

https://matrix.org/blog/2025/06/dispelling-myths/

I'd like to say this set my mind at rest. But while plenty was said, a number of the criticisms raised were skirted around, while others weren't addressed at all.

I have plenty to say about all this. There's a lot of moving parts here, and I want to make sure I get my facts rights as best I can. As well as explaining my take on it all in a way that's fair to everyone involved.

It's going to take a blog piece.

@strypey @matrix there's also https://element.io/blog/addressing-fear-uncertainty-and-doubt-thrown-at-element-and-matrix/ from our side, fwiw.

Addressing fear, uncertainty and doubt thrown at Element and Matrix

We’ve seen a serious uptick in misinformation about Element and Matrix over the last week, so thought it would be useful to set the record straight from Element’s side.
