Do we actually need one though?
LinkedIn is just social media for CEOs, grifters, and HR/recruiters, with a jobs board bolted on.
Imo those two things don't belong together - that's part of why LinkedIn is such a shit show.
I participated in a similar discussion here a few days ago. I don't have any alternatives, but we did talk about the specific features that make LinkedIn... useful?
- The Fediverse already does general purpose social network stuff.
- Job boards seem like they might be interesting.
- We could probably filter out the crap posts better, too.
Do you think there's a place for recruiters here? Somehing like a more structured version of the "getfedihired" hashtag?
Yes. Custom profile data would be important. I'm going to have to wrap my head around this more.
One trouble with "X on the Fediverse" is that custom data (like salary history, experience) only works on apps that understand it. You'd HAVE to use a supporting server to use these extended fields.
But maybe we could link to your current profile somehow? Or let you authenticate with your existing Mastodon profile to get started?
