when looking for alternatives for #discord, you really start to notice how much it does; dms, public chatrooms with topic channels, voice AND video chat, and livestreams.
that’s kind of a lot of features, each its own technical maintenance, plus the last two taking up ALOT of bandwidth.
just saying you’re probably not going to find one single app that does all of them, and that’s ok. don’t treat discord as the ONE standard all apps must conform to as a base.

Part of the problem is the lack of a universal SSO solution. I wouldn't mind using 5 different apps instead of 1 if could login to them all with one ID. Rather than having to create and validate a new account on each, then remember which accounts I have, and keep track of login credentials for each (or take the risk of reusing passwords, or have conversations about password managers *shudder).
@strypey Indeed that's a valid point; to me the simplest solution would be to implement a passwordless option, using something like a yubikey to sign in to your accounts, kinda like what google has been pushing the last few years.
seems a basic option all chat platforms should have by now, yet that's scarcely the case.

Urggh. So instead of taking the risk someone might crack one of your passphrases, you're taking the risk of losing access to everything, everywhere, all at once ( can feel a blog post on passphrases coming on), if your hardware key gets lost (or stolen). I can't help but point out that stealing a hardware key is even easier than beating your passphrase out of you;

and on the topic of putting all your eggs into one basket, whose to say you couldn’t lose everything if your SSO of choice gets hacked? having multiple accounts tied to one id seems very risky, even if seemingly convenient
whether that is more likely than your other suggested scenario depends on your situation.

If you can remember that, you can remember "correctbatterystaplehorse" ; )
Also, more than one security key means more than one backup in a vault, and remembering to keep them all in sync, and which backup key goes with which. I'm reminded of;

Sure, but most of the passphrases we need to remember can be reset by email, and most people have them all tied to one email account. So this is the situation we're already in, just without the convenience of SSO ; )

Honestly, you'd be better to write all your passphrases down on a piece of note paper and keep it in your wallet. Because you're typing them in, you're more likely to remember them, especially the one for your email. So if you lose your wallet, you're not going to lose access to everything, and you can use your email to reset any passphrases you can't remember.
