RE: https://mastodon.social/@DrALJONES/116029489613320355

100% agreed with the sentiment of a boycott of the US.

But, let's acknowledge that the violence of the US started 250 years ago (really 534 years w/ Columbus) with genocide of the indigenous people of these continents. Then continued in slavery and violent foreign interventions as far back as the 1800s.

Violence and resource theft is a foundational element of US domestic and foreign policy. Trump is just being more open about it. Let's be totally honest about this history!

Any boycott, to be honest, needs to go far beyond Trump and acknowledge what came before and what would come after. Trump and his regime is a big red, pussy zit that's rupturing all over itself and everyone else.

Now is the time for a full reckoning with 70+ years of US hegemony. The global community, Northern and Southern nations, have an opportunity to begin a re-balancing of the global order.

A better, more fair and sane world will be one where the US is demoted. No better, no more powerful than any other.

Correction:

... let's acknowledge that the violence of the Americas started 533 years ago (1493) with the genocide of the indigenous people of these continents.

Then violence, rape and murder continued in slavery and violent interventions as far back as 1619 (407 years ago) and the first slave ships arrived...

Columbus began his own pre-genocide of indigenous people of the Americas and the first slave ship unloaded Africans abducted from Senegal, Africa.

History is important to keep track of properly, otherwise politicians over time, will try to rewrite it to suit their own means.

I recommend Howard Zinn's book " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_People's_History_of_the_United_States " to understand what "America" has really been about for over 500 yrs.

@ahumanbeinz 100% I should have written that instead. I'm actually working my way through Zinn's book right now, about 70% through it. Absolutely recommend it.

Thank you. I meant no criticism nor mean intent.
I just wanted accuracy because misinformation can be turned into disinformation..or as Orwell said "Doublespeak" and actually LOSE any significance that it's supposed to have for younger generations.
I'm 76 yrs old, and I've seen all kinds of misinformation used by accident, ignorance, and deliberate propaganda, since I was a teenager in the early 1960's.
Thank you for what you're doing.

@ahumanbeinz No problem, I'm glad you offered the correction and I took it as good intent. We have to be as clear and truthful about our history as we can be. Thanks for offering it! 鉂わ笍

Totally agree.

But, to be fair, #European #history is full of violence and resource theft, too.

And while I'm not much deep into #Chinese and #Russian internal history, I guess they are not much better (even excluding the last century, I mean).

To dismantle the #US-led world order is urgent.

But we should be careful to not just replace them with another oppressive empire.

Agreed 100%. The US is just a branch of the European project of settler colonialism and all the violence of that process. And agreed about the others mentioned though I'm largely ignorant of those histories.
